In a significant stride towards improving sanitation and hygiene within the community, Ray Of Hope Empowerment Foundation proudly commissioned a newly constructed block of 4-room toilets at LEA Nursery and Primary School Zhidu. This initiative, part of the "Toilet In Public Schools" (PROJECT TIPS), aims to eradicate open defecation and provide a clean, safe environment for students.

Prior to this project, the pupils at LEA Nursery and Primary School Zhidu had been forced to defecate behind the classrooms, lacking access to proper toilet facilities for over a decade. This dire situation posed severe health risks and impacted the overall well-being and dignity of the students.

The successful completion of this project is a testament to the power of collaboration and community support. Ray Of Hope Empowerment Foundation extends heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed their time, resources, and expertise to make this dream a reality. The new toilet facilities will significantly improve the health and hygiene standards at the school, positively impacting the lives of the students for years to come.

If you would like to partner with us to build more toilets for public schools across Nigeria, please call the following numbers: +23481-17060976, +23481-17420070.

STOP THE RED SPOT AND PAD A GIRL: Ending Period Poverty and Empowering Girls

The Ray Of Hope Empowerment Foundation recently launched the "STOP THE RED SPOT AND PAD A GIRL" program, a vital initiative aimed at addressing period poverty, dismantling menstrual taboos, and reducing absenteeism among schoolgirls during their menstrual cycles. The program's key component involves the establishment of pad banks, ensuring that girls have access to sanitary products and can attend school without interruption.

Event Highlights

Diane Kelechi Lawrence, the Executive Director of Guiding Light Foundation spoke on "Menstrual Cycle and Depression," highlighting the emotional and psychological impacts of menstruation on girls and advocating for greater awareness and support.

Jesutoki,Delivered a talk on "Identifying and Understanding Different Forms of Ab¥ses," educating attendees on recognizing and addressing various types of ab¥se that can affect both boys and girls

Hilda, Addressed how "Menstruation Can Be a Barrier to Girls' Education," emphasizing the challenges faced by girls during their menstrual cycles and the importance of supportive environments.

Students, both boys and girls, performed a short drama showcasing how boys can contribute to ending period shaming, promoting inclusivity and mutual support in the fight against period stigma.
A male student also demonstrated the correct way to wear a sanitary pad, breaking down gender barriers and fostering understanding and empathy among all students.

The National Coordinator of the Ray Of Hope Empowerment Foundation, Christybelle Ijeoma Sylva highlighted the organization's extensive support for schoolgirls across Nigeria. Over the past seven years, the foundation has provided menstrual hygiene education and resources to more than 20,000 schoolgirls in 44 public schools.
She underscored the critical role of education and resource provision in promoting menstrual hygiene and reducing school absenteeism.

The principal and students expressed profound gratitude for the foundation's efforts. The principal noted that this was the first time Menstrual Hygiene Day had been commemorated at their school, marking a significant milestone in raising awareness and supporting girls' education.

At the end of the program, over 150 girls got a Hygiene pack consisting of: Sanitary Pads, Bathing Soaps, Detergents and toothbrushes while over 50 boys got a Hygiene pack consisting of: Shaving sticks, toilet papers, bathing soaps and toothbrushes. A sanitary pad bank consisting of 100 packs of sanitary pads was also donated to the school as this will help reduce absenteeism during menstruation.

The "STOP THE RED SPOT AND PAD A GIRL" program is a transformative initiative by the Ray Of Hope Empowerment Foundation. By providing essential resources and education, it not only addresses period poverty but also works towards eradicating menstrual taboos and ensuring that no girl has to miss school because of her period. The program's impact is evidenced by the heartfelt appreciation from the school community and the positive changes in attitudes towards menstruation and menstrual hygiene.

We all wore the menstruation bracelet to symbolize our dedication to eradicating period poverty in Nigeria. This involves providing underprivileged schoolgirls with access to sanitary pads and proper washroom facilities at school. Menstruation should never hinder a girl's education.
Let's work together to establish a period-friendly environment in Nigeria where girls can openly discuss menstruation without fear or shame.

Get involved! as a volunteer, donor, or advocate, there's a role for you in the STOP THE RED SPOT AND PAD A GIRL PROJECT.

Together, let's make menstrual health a priority and create a PERIOD FRIENDLY NIGERIA where every girl has access to sanitary pads and decent wash rooms.
