Sundance Lake Residents Association Ltd. Sundance Lake is a private facility and is for the exclusive use of Lake Sundance residents and their registered guests only.

The lake is approximately 33 acres and the park surrounding the lake is approximately 22 acres. On average, the lake is 22 feet deep and it 38 feet at its deepest point. Facilities include: Banquet room with seating for 160 people, 3 smaller meeting rooms, 2 cook shelters, several outdoor BBQs and picnic tables, a waterfall, sandy beach, 2 playgrounds, 4 tennis courts and 1 backboard, a basketball

court, beach volleyball court, horseshoe pits, paved rink for rollerblading and roller hockey, and a large soccer field with nets. Summer Activities include: swimming, boating (kayaks, rowboats, canoes and pedal boats), windsurfing, fishing (both on and off shore), basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, horseshoes and roller hockey. Winter activities include: skating on the upper rink around a firepit, 3 illuminated hockey rinks on the lake, skating around the lake on a pathway, tobogganing (big and small hill), cross-country skiing, and ice fishing. Sundance Lake also sets up a large Christmas light display each year. Sundance Lake also organizes various activities year round for all ages including a children’s Easter Egg Hunt, a Stampede Breakfast, adult curling bonspiel and social, and an annual Christmas Party with Santa.

We understand how frustrating the continued delays are. Unfortunately, the crew we hired has run into some unexpected delays that are out of our control.

We recently received laboratory testing results from water samples collected on July 31st & August 17th, including a sample taken specifically at the access dock in zone 4 as well as a sample from the main beach.

Microcystin Results

⚠️ Cyanobacteria Update ⚠️

We continue to test the lake water weekly for cyanobacteria toxins. Due to the high volume of cyanobacteria currently present, the flag will remain yellow at this time.

So far, all toxin tests have come back negative. We will continue monitoring and testing the water regularly.

If a toxin test comes back positive, the water will be closed and the flag will be changed to red.

Please be aware that as this is a health advisory, the lake is use at your own risk.

Important Lake Water Advisory – Cyanobacteria

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has visually confirmed the presence of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in Lake Sundance and will be issuing a cyanobacteria advisory for the lake through November 2026.

Under the advisory, AHS recommends that residents avoid swimming, wading or other direct contact with the water in areas where a cyanobacterial bloom is visibly present.

What should you look for?
Cyanobacterial blooms can vary in appearance and may look like:

- Green, blue-green or brownish water
- Pea soup or paint-like material in the water
- Green scum, streaks or clumps on the surface
- Accumulations of algae along the shoreline

If you can see a bloom, please stay out of the water in that area and keep children and pets away from the affected water.

If no bloom is visibly present, AHS has advised that recreational use of the water, including swimming, may continue.

Because conditions can change with weather, wind and water movement, a bloom may be present in one area of the lake while another area appears clear. Residents should therefore assess the water conditions where they intend to enter the lake each time before swimming or participating in water activities.

The presence of cyanobacteria does not necessarily mean that toxins are present at harmful levels at all times. However, cyanobacteria can produce toxins, which is why avoiding contact with visibly affected water is important.

SLRA will continue to monitor lake conditions and work with Alberta Health Services regarding the advisory and water quality.

Dear Residents,

We would like to provide you with an update on the 2026 Lake Water Management Program and the activities planned over the next two weeks.

Mechanical Aquatic Vegetation Removal

Mechanical harvesting of aquatic vegetation began again on August 5, 2026. This will be the third cutting of the season and is an important component of the current lake management strategy.

Mechanical harvesting is intended not only to improve access around the shoreline and docks, but also to remove aquatic plant material and the nutrients contained within those plants from the lake. Unlike chemical treatments, which leave dead vegetation to decompose in the water, mechanical harvesting physically removes both the vegetation and a portion of the nutrient load from the lake.

It is also important to understand that aquatic vegetation is not viewed simply as something to be eliminated. Aquatic plants play an important role in absorbing nutrients from the water as they grow. Allowing plants to grow and take up the nutrients is therefore an important part of the strategy. If vegetation is cut or removed too frequently, the plants have less opportunity to absorb and retain nutrients. The objective is therefore to find an appropriate balance between allowing aquatic vegetation to perform its natural nutrient-uptake function and harvesting it at the appropriate time to remove the nutrients contained within the plant material from the lake.

Water Column Clarifier Application

During the week of August 10, 2026, a second application of the Water Column Clarifier is scheduled. This treatment is designed to improve water clarity by encouraging suspended particles to bind together and settle out of the water column. As with all components of the current management program, its effectiveness can be influenced by weather conditions, water temperature, wind, and other environmental factors.

Current Lake Conditions

We recognize that the algae blooms experienced this summer have been frustrating and have affected the enjoyment of the lake for many residents. We share your disappointment and understand the importance of maintaining a safe and enjoyable recreational environment.

Historically, algae and aquatic vegetation were managed primarily through chemical treatments. While these products often produced short-term visual improvements, they did not address the nutrient accumulation that has developed within the lake over many years. Based on recommendations from independent professionals with expertise in lake and aquatic ecosystem management, continued reliance on chemical treatments has been discouraged as a long-term management strategy.

The current program represents a shift in focus—from treating the visible symptoms to addressing the conditions that contribute to recurring algae blooms and excessive aquatic vegetation. Although this approach requires patience and there are no guarantees of immediate results, it is intended to improve the overall ecological health of the lake and reduce reliance on repeated chemical applications over time.

The information and observations gathered throughout the 2026 season will be instrumental in evaluating the effectiveness of the current approach and refining future lake management strategies.

The Board, Management, and the Lake Water Management Committee continue to monitor lake conditions closely and work with our aquatic ecosystem consultants to assess treatment performance and determine the most appropriate next steps.

We appreciate the patience, understanding, and feedback we have received from residents as we work toward improving the long-term health of Lake Sundance.
