Congratulations & Thank You!

The 8th Annual Ashton Matheson Golf Classic took place at the Sirocco Golf Club on Monday, August 21st. A sold out field of golfers were treated to a perfect day of golf, food, drink, good company and even a solar eclipse while raising $13,073.10 for a dedicated Tuberous Sclerosis fund within the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. This brings the 8-year total donation to $63,800.16! It is truly amazing what has been created by this relatively small group of people who have all embraced what the AMGC is about. The funds raised, work being done and community we have created is due to your support and generosity.

We originally started this tournament in 2010 as a way for our family to remember Ashton and how our journey began, to build awareness for TS and possibly raise a little money along the way. Funds raised from the first two tournaments were used to initiate and support a 2-day Tuberous Sclerosis Symposium at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in May of 2012. We are now working with a team of Doctors and support staff at the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation to use these funds as a catalyst for a Genetics/Neurology collaborative service here in Calgary. A Master’s student was hired for a second term to work on a number of priorities relating to Tuberous Sclerosis, including a TS Registry, TS Resource Page and to organize a TS parent engagement/support event.

We couldn’t have made it this far without everyone who has helped along the way and hope to see everyone back next year! Thank you.

The 8th Annual Ashton Matheson Charity Golf Classic is set for Monday, August 21, 2017 at Sirocco Golf Club in Calgary, Alberta!

We originally decided to host this tournament as a way for our family to remember Ashton Robert Matheson as well as a fundraiser for Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) awareness and support. The goal was to host a small, fun and informal tournament for friends and family that has exceed all expectations through the first seven years. Not only have we have raised $50,727 that has been donated to a dedicated TSC fund within the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, but we are building a TSC aware group within Calgary.

Most of you already know our story however for those that do not, here is a brief history as to why this tournament is so meaningful to us: On November 21, 2008 Miss Taylor Grace Matheson was born at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. She entered this world over 7-weeks pre-mature and weighed only 3 lbs 12 oz. This grand entrance came after courageously overcoming complications caused by a mass surrounding her heart - cardiac rhabdomyoma. Sadly Taylor’s twin brother, Ashton Robert, was unable to overcome these same complications and passed away in utero on October 16, 2008. Ashton, Taylor and Scott have since been diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). This is a multi-system genetic disorder that affects an estimated one in 6,000 births with symptoms ranging from mild/non-existent to neurological damage causing seizures and disabilities. After living much of the last 8 years relatively symptom free, Taylor was recently diagnosed with Epilepsy as a symptom of TSC. She is a resilient and brave girl who continues to overcome each obstacle in her path.

Funds raised to date have be used to initiate and support a 2-day Tuberous Sclerosis Symposium at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in 2012. The symposium included educational rounds and lectures by guest speakers Dr. Elizabeth Thiele (Mass General Hospital for Children, Boston, MA) and Dr. Peter Crino (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA); as well as a ‘Family Evening’ for families affected by this disorder. We are currently working with Dr. Francois Bernier and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation to allocate funds raised from the past 5 tournaments towards a dedicated TS Clinic at the Alberta Children’s Hospital here in Calgary.

Should you be interested in playing or wanting to donate a prize/auction item please connect with Scott (403-305-5550) or Shannon (403-710-0301) direct. Space is limited and spots are filled on a first come first serve basis.

Thanks to everyone who has participated or helped out over the first 7 years.

Congratulations & Thank You!

The 7th Annual Ashton Matheson Golf Classic took place at the Sirocco Golf Club on Monday, August 8th, and given the forecast it was unbelievable that we once again played under sunny blue skies! The biggest turnout yet was treated to a perfect day of golf, food, drink and good company while raising $10,133.12 for a dedicated Tuberous Sclerosis fund within the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. This brings the 7-year total amount raised to $50,727.06!

We are now working with a team of Doctors and support staff led by Dr. Francois Bernier and Dr. Jong Rho at the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation to use our funds as a catalyst for a Genetics/Neurology collaborative service here in Calgary. A Master’s student was hired this summer to begin work on number of priorities relating to Tuberous Sclerosis and Neurofibromatosis. To date she is working to create a comprehensive resource package for new parents, a needs assessment program to better treat and support families as well as an internal Genetics Registry that will aid in future communications, support programs and educational symposiums. There is still a lot of work to be done, but are moving in the right direction.
