What’s This All About, Anyway?
Skateboarding is an interesting community, and lifestyle, to wrap your head around. Here’s a snippet of who we are: a taste test, or a toe in the water, so to speak. First off, I want to say thank you for being here, and taking interest in what we do and who we are.
“Our vision is that every youth in the skateboarding and snowboarding community of Canada would know their value and realize their potential for having a positive impact in the world. This is achieved through consistent weekly programming, annual events and camps, and significant global and local partnerships, wherein we serve and mentor the youth and young adults of the action sports community.”
In 2008 research from Alberta Recreation stated that there were 34,406 skateboarders in the Calgary area. Over the past 12 years skateboarding has continued to increase in popularity and yet there remain limited services or programs that engage this demographic. This is tragic, as many of these individuals come from difficult home situations, deal with depression, feelings of rejection and therefore, do not grow into healthy and stable members of society.
These youth need mentors and people who are willing to invest in them. By having just one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult, the chances of positive outcomes for a youth improve drastically (Harvard Centre on the Developing Child, 2015).
