Great blue herons are back on the Medicine So nice to see them - tried for a pic but no luck yet. Also a lone loon was sighted - I wonder how long they will stay?

The cover photo shows the Medicine River at the historic crossing area- the area of 3 springs coming from the Red Deer River underground through a gravel seam to feed the prominent walleye spawning beds. In the past it was easy to hear the rushing waters at the Medicine exit site. Here it is June 15 2025 and there is no water in one area and limited in 2. My position is that continued gravel seam Strip mining and gravel equipment compaction from cumulative gravel pits has severed the river to river hydraulic water connection . Given the frenzy of pits in floodplains priority over people's drinking water and the fishery soon there will be no
Medicine River walleye and other fish spawning and rearing beds in this Fishery Dept critical spawning beds formed in the 2 ks upstream of the Medicine River Bridge running north toward Markerville. So darn sad . Gravel strip mines in flood plains should be STOPPED.

Down to the "crossing" on the Medicine River where there was always a spring running in from the Red Deer . It id dry as a bone - that stream connection through the gravel underlying this aquifer confluence is been severed it seems. Walleye spawn tat that location will have been a failure for sure. I'm not happy - what a tragedy for all downstream and walleye fishery.
