Last but certainly not least, your VP Finance and Operations: Antonio Chemello!!💰

Antonio completed his Bachelor of Science in Immunology and Infection at the University of Alberta before moving to Calgary. He ran for the CMSA because he wanted to serve his class and ensure the CMSA works for students. As VP Finance and Operations, he hopes to make his portfolio more efficient, accountable, and transparent. He hopes to be a welcoming point of contact for any questions about the CMSA, especially finances!

Outside of class, you might find him at an ice cream eating contest or at the curling club. Antonio is chronically in the kitchen, where he often cooks an elaborate meal (think deep dish pizza and cinnamon twists) instead of catching up on cards. When ‘trapped’ in his apartment, he will find time to play video games like R.E.P.O., Hearts of Iron 4 or Civilization 6.

He recognizes the trust he has been given in this role and is committed to representing students’ interests on council. He is always happy to hear from students and wants to provide clear, transparent access to CMSA finances for all University of Calgary medical students!

Meet one of your VP Events: Catherine Betancourt Lee

Catherine is soooo excited to be half of your events team! She completed her Bachelor’s at the University of Calgary in Biomedical Engineering and then worked in medical device land at Boston Scientific.

During undergrad, she was heavily involved in extracurriculars - running galas, conferences and many other events - and she’s now thrilled to be able to plan and execute fun, inclusive social events for the Wobbies! Catherine is passionate about fostering the class spirit through experiences that bring everyone closer together!

Outside of school, you’ll probably find her line dancing (come to Ranchman’s!!!), playing her guitar, completing research, and spending time with her friends! She’s also a Co-Chair for Stick It To Cancer (buy your ticket!!) and an executive for the Canadian Association of Latin Medical Students.

She’s so grateful to be one of your VP Events, and prides herself on transparency, communication and creating a safe and welcoming environment. If you have any feedback, concerns or even better ideas, please reach out - she’s always happy to reach out and make new friends!

🌟Next up: VP EVENTS 🌟

Meet one of your VP Events: IJun Seo
IJun is so grateful to be part of the CMSA team and Events Team! She completed her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Calgary in Plant Biology before working in the mental health field as a crisis responder and youth program coordinator at Distress Centre Calgary. Those experiences deepened her love for supporting others, building connection, and creating spaces where people feel seen and cared for.
She is a proud South Korean immigrant and a small-town girl from rural Alberta, and now IJun is incredibly grateful to call MohkĂnstsis (Calgary) home. Community has always been at the heart of everything she does - She has always loved bringing people together and fostering meaningful connection and she is so excited to channel that passion into creating memorable and thoughtful fun events for all of us.
Outside of school, you can find IJun knitting something cozy, singing, playing the guitar or piano, thrifting for hidden gems, or hanging out with her gal pals. She’s happiest in the mountains with her fiancĂ© and their two dogs, Cola and Bodhi, soaking up fresh air and connecting with Mother Nature.
IJun is truly excited to serve as one of your Co-VP Events. She values feedback, advocacy, transparency, and collaboration, and she can’t wait to work alongside you to make this year vibrant, inclusive, and full of moments we’ll always remember.

Meet your VP Communications: Eliana!

Eliana is dedicated to making sure you get the information you need, and stay updated on all the amazing events run by our student groups. She is always happy to help with questions about communications, so please feel free to ask when in doubt!

Before medical school, she completed her BSc in Honours Physiology at the University of Alberta, and worked as an optometric assistant. In her free time, you can find her exploring cafes, binge-watching TV shows (currently: Bridgerton and The Pitt!), or thinking of meme ideas for the Wobbegong Weekly! She rotates through many hobbies, including reading, journaling, taekwondo, and, most recently, playing the clarinet!

Eliana is so grateful to serve as part of the CMSA team. If you see her, please feel free to say hello, and don’t hesitate to send her memes to be featured on the newsletter :)

Ore is a medical student with a strong background in health equity, rural and remote accessibility, and youth advocacy. She is proudly Nigerian, happily 6 feet tall, and wholeheartedly Mrs. Worldwide. She lived in London, England before moving to rural northern Alberta, giving her a truly international (and very jet-lagged) life experience. From urban to rural, cross-continental to Calgary, accessibility and representation have always been central to why Ore advocates so fiercely for students on a national scale.
As VP External - National, Ore is passionate about making sure students actually know about the supports available to them. Accessibility is a core pillar of her role, and she is focused on distributing resources and amplifying opportunities equitably, ensuring students feel seen and represented in national conversations. She also serves as VP of the Black Medical Students’ Association and is excited to bring that advocacy lens into her CMSA work.
Outside of medicine, Ore is a huge foodie who loves Calgary’s food scene (salmon avocado sushi rolls have her heart), a Survivor and MasterChef enthusiast, and a former NYT Crossword loyalist who has recently fallen hard for the Minute Cryptic puzzles. Fun fact: she was once invited to meet the Queen at Buckingham Palace. If you couldn’t tell from her bright stethoscope, phone case, and everything else she owns, her favourite colour is pink.
Ore loves chatting with her family, playing the clarinet, and cheering people on as they chase big dreams. Her favourite thing to say is “do it afraid”, and she encourages everyone around her to do just that 💌

Introducing your VP External Affairs - Provincial!

Noam steps into the role with a strong background in health policy and advocacy. As a former policy advisor for Alberta Health, he knows how health policy works in Alberta – and firmly believes medical students should be a part of shaping it.

Outside of school, Noam can usually be found snowboarding, hiking, paddle boarding, and cycling. He also loves to travel, catch live music, and is a big hockey fan!
Originally from Edmonton, he holds on to hope that McDavid will hoist the cup in an Oilers Jersey.

Noam’s favourite animals are sharks, so being part of the Wobbegongs just feels right. He’s honoured and excited to represent his classmates on a provincial level, through student advocacy days, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta’s Council, and the Alberta Medical Association.

If you have an advocacy idea, concern, or just want to talk policy, hockey, or sharks – Noam is always happy to chat :)

Meet your CMSA VP Community & Global Health, Sara!! Sara is a medical student in the MD/MSc Leaders in Medicine program with a strong background in community-engaged research, health equity, and AI systems. With lived experience as a refugee, she is deeply committed to advancing equitable access to care and amplifying community voices in health systems.

She’s a proud 5:30am riser (yes, on purpose), and you can usually catch her at the gym, doing yoga, or trying and surviving spin classes before most people have had their first coffee. You’ll also often catch her experimenting with new recipes; she likes to think she’d be a chef in a parallel life.

Sara is incredibly grateful to be part of the CMSA and excited to serve as your VP Community & Global Health. She values collaboration, approachability, and meaningful engagement, and is always open to connecting, listening, and working together to support communities locally and globally.

Meet your CMSA VP EDIIA, Rica!!

Rica is a medical student with a kinesiology background and experience in patient care and equity-focused leadership. She’s also an active member of the Black Medical Students’ Association, and is committed to creating inclusive, accessible spaces and fostering a strong sense of belonging within the medical school community.

Outside of school, she loves Pilates, always has music playing, and spends a lot of time on FaceTime with friends. She has two dogs and a cat (definitely a cat person), enjoys sci-fi and fantasy, reads romance novels in her downtime, and is currently learning speed-cubing, which she can solve in under a minute.

She’s also currently watching Love Island: All Stars “Charge it to the game.”

Rica is incredibly honoured and genuinely happy to be part of the CMSA and to serve as your VP EDIIA. She values transparency, approachability, and meaningful engagement. She’s always open to connecting, listening, and working together to make a more supportive space for everyone.

Up next: Ryan, VP SAW!

I am very excited to be your VP of Student Advocacy and Wellness.
I am passionate about creating environments where people feel supported, heard, and comfortable being themselves. I bring diverse experience in mental health advocacy and frontline work, having led wellness and education initiatives in high-pressure settings where burnout and stress were common, even when they were not openly discussed.
Before medical school, I worked as a Registered Nurse and Mental Health Therapist. Alongside my clinical work, I helped develop a peer support program for teachers focused on burnout prevention and stress management. These experiences continue to shape how I approach wellness and advocacy, and have given me a strong appreciation for the stress that often exists behind the scenes. My goal is to help ensure wellness initiatives are meaningful, to amplify student voices, and to strengthen connection between students, faculty, and support services within UME.
Outside of school, I enjoy staying active through hiking, biking, playing hockey, and strength training. We are also new to Calgary, so building community is a work in progress (I am always open to suggestions on your favorite local spots).
I am excited to work alongside all of you to help make medical school a place where students can thrive and not just get through it. I also try to be approachable, so please feel free to reach out with concerns, ideas, or suggestions. I cannot promise to fix everything, but I can promise to listen and do my best.
