$13,700

Surprising amount, right?

Well, that’s how much we currently owe our veterinary partners. And that’s just from the last month and a half.

We need to get these bills down now so we can continue to help.

We want to sincerely thank everyone who generously donated toward the care of Honeysuckle, Todd, Seven, Potato, Taz, and Malcolm. Your support made a real difference.

But there are numerous other animals who have come through our care. Community members who have reached out for help. Cats needing spays, neuters, dentals and emergency procedures. Entire colonies we’re working to TNVR now to prevent these costs from exploding exponentially later.

Not every animal makes it onto social media. But every animal still needs care.

$13,700 is what we need to pay, and we need to pay it soon.

Please consider making a financial donation at BHARS.org/donate.

And our 50/50 raffle is now LIVE, with proceeds going toward these veterinary balances:

🐾 TODD HAS ENTERED HIS TRIPAWD ERA 🐾

From a shy boy who had basically given up… to THIS. ❤️

Todd is loving life with his foster family. He’s trusting, playful, affectionate, and apparently has absolutely ZERO interest in running away.

Why would he? He knows where the food is. He knows where his people are. And he knows he’s loved. 🥹

His amputation site has healed beautifully, and his stitches came out last week. Coincidentally, that was also the day Honeysuckle went into the hospital, so we’re especially grateful to be ending this week with BOTH boys doing well. ❤️

Thank you to everyone who has supported Todd along the way. His second chance is looking pretty damn good. 🐶❤️

08/19/2026

Look who’s behaving like he hasn’t tried to leave us several times already. 😬🙄

Honeysuckle is…thriving?

Keep it up little man!

P.S. His foster mama said “not Facebook worthy cause of his dirty face”. Toddlers be toddlers…😂

This Is Why We Stop. Every. Single. Time. 💔

As animal rescuers, we stop.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a dog, cat, bird, wild animal, or anything else in distress. If we come across an animal who needs help, we don’t just drive past and hope someone else deals with it.

Today, we came across a severely injured hawk sitting directly on the centre line of the highway.

By the time I could safely stop, I was about 50 feet past them. They were still moving. There was a line of three vehicles approaching from the opposite direction, with plenty of opportunity to see and avoid this animal.

As I stopped to turn around and help, I watched the first vehicle in that line hit the hawk again.

I don’t know why.

Maybe the driver was distracted. Maybe they didn’t see them. Maybe they thought the hawk was beyond saving and intentionally hit them, believing they were putting them out of their misery. Or maybe they simply didn’t care.

We’ll never know.

What we do know is that someone had already hit this animal. And that person didn’t stop.

That’s the part that is incredibly frustrating.

The initial impact may have been an accident. Animals can end up on roads unexpectedly, and accidents happen. But whether this hawk could have survived that first impact or not, they did not deserve to be left in the middle of a highway, suffering.

Someone stopping can be the difference between life and death.

This was a hawk. You cannot hit an animal of this size without knowing something happened.

And, once again, our brains were in rescue mode, not picture-taking or video-taking mode. When an animal is actively suffering, our first thought is getting them help, not documenting it for social media.

Caring for other living beings shouldn’t be left to the next person who happens to come along.

If you see an animal in distress, please stop when it is safe to do so. Call for help. Don’t assume someone else will.

Because sometimes, you are the someone else.

And sometimes, stopping is the only chance they have. 💔

⚠️ WARNING FOUL LANGUAGE ⚠️

😼 Want an as***le for a roommate, but don’t want them to be human? We might have the cat for you. 😂

Some want food, a clean litter box, and the freedom to silently judge you.

🐱 SQ**RT
This beautiful dilute tortie was an AMAZING mama to Sprout and surrogate for four more babies. Once they were old enough, Sq**rt basically said, “Cool. My shift is over.” She’ll give you attention when she feels like it, but prefers to exist on her own terms.

🐱 THEODORA “TEDDY”
Teddy raised babies, all now adopted. Now she enjoys free resources, occasional appearances, silent judgment, and hiding.

🐱 MOLLY
Molly gave birth to her kittens in a compost bin on a farm. She was a wonderful mother. All her babies are adopted. Molly takes a LONG time to trust people. She wants food, water, a clean litter box, and peace… without prolonged eye contact.

🐱 KEVIN
Kevin is a ginger tabby with FIV and an attitude that says he knows exactly how important he is. He’s good with humans but has limits. He plays rough with other cats, so we don’t feel he should live with FIV-negative cats because of the risk of a deep bite wound transmitting FIV.

Kevin thinks he’s the boss. Honestly, he might be.

🐱 GIZMO
Gizmo was surrendered after becoming aggressive toward a human roommate. We’ve learned she simply has a very low tolerance for nonsense.

She’ll come for head boops and scratches, but touch her tail? You may have just made a serious mistake. 😂 She loves her quiet cat tree and is happy to exist without demanding much.

🐱 JEFF
Jeff is a gorgeous brown tabby with white. He’s not aggressive, just shy. He’ll stare from a distance and, if you’re patient, might reward you with a trill or little nose boop.

Don’t expect cuddles. Jeff has boundaries. Give him space and he’ll be your silent roommate.

❤️ These cats deserve homes, too. Some cats just want to coexist.

If you’re the right person for one of these particular roommates, please fill out an application. We’ll still follow our normal approval process.

For these cats, it’s name your adoption fee, with a minimum of $25.

One Rescue. Two Names. One Mission. ❤️

Since February 2023, BHARS has been working across Central and Southern Alberta to help animals and the people who love them. In that time, we’ve helped more than 700 animals.

That work takes many forms. Sometimes it’s intake, emergency medical care, rehabilitation and adoption. Sometimes it’s TNVR. Sometimes it’s helping a family who simply needs a hand up so their animal can receive veterinary care, or providing food and other supplies to help keep that animal safely in the home with the people they love, sometimes the only people who have ever loved them.

And sometimes, we meet animals during the toughest moments of their lives. Animals who have been failed by the people responsible for them. Animals who need someone to step in, make difficult decisions on their behalf, and do everything we can to give them the care, dignity and compassion they deserve.

Along the way, something pretty special happened with The Warm Whiskers Project.

Warm Whiskers began doing TNVR in Southern Alberta and quickly became a force in its own right, helping large numbers of community cats. But TNVR inevitably brings you face-to-face with cats who cannot be returned to the outdoor community they came from. They may be too young, too friendly, too sick or too injured to safely return.

They needed somewhere to land.

That place became BHARS.

What started as a mutual need grew into a partnership that has become an important part of the work we do. The Warm Whiskers Project now operates as an initiative under BHARS.

So, if you’re new here and wonder why you see posts and activity under two different rescue accounts, this is why. People know both names for different reasons, and both have their own history and presence in the communities we serve.

But the work is connected.

We are one group. One team. One mission.

More than 700 animals helped since February 2023, from TNVR and community support to emergency medical care, rescue, rehabilitation and adoption.

And we’re not done yet. ❤️

Malcolm 💙

Meet Malcolm, a beautiful approximately 9-year-old gentleman who is definitely one of a kind.

Malcolm has a whole collection of distinctive features, including a body shape that makes him look a little like a triangle! He’s broader through the chest and tapers toward his back end. He even has some of the elegant features you might expect from an Oriental Shorthair. Is something wrong with him? Nope! We’ve had Malcolm thoroughly checked, including X-rays and blood work, and this handsome guy is simply built a little differently. 😻

And then there’s that fur. His silky, shiny gray coat is absolutely gorgeous, and he knows how to work it!

Malcolm did have some severe dental disease that needed to be addressed. After his dental surgery, he’s now down to just three little incisors on the top and three on the bottom. But that certainly hasn’t slowed him down! He eats, plays, chats, and carries on with life like the charming little man he is.

Malcolm is a friendly, chatty boy who loves attention and is looking for a home where he can enjoy the good life: playing, snuggling, and being thoroughly adored.

If you’re looking for a sweet, unique, slightly quirky gentleman who will keep you company and keep the conversation going, Malcolm might just be your guy. 💙🐾
