When Jake and Melissa first moved to their 150-acre woodland, it felt far from the chaos of the modern world.

Five years later, suburban development has crept steadily closer to Owlwood.

“It’s astounding how much development has happened around us,” says Jake. “It went from feeling like a quiet country road to the very beginnings of a suburb.”

That growing development is what led them to partner with NSWWT to place a Working Forest Community Easement on their land—ensuring their forest will remain a healthy, working woodland for generations to come.

As the snow begins to melt and the woods shift toward spring, we’re taking a moment to look back on what’s been a busy and meaningful winter!

From long days on snowshoes to time spent walking properties, connecting with landowners, and seeing forests in their quietest season — it’s been a full (and snowy) winter in the woods.

With the season turning, we’re looking ahead to longer days, fresh growth, the return of migrating birds, and all that comes with spring in the forest. We’re excited to kick things off by heading to the Woodland Owner Conferences in April — and look forward to connecting with many of you there.

It’s officially tapping season in Nova Scotia 🍁

For the Wentzel family, this is one of the sweetest times of the year. Every March, the whole family heads into their woodland with a drill, a bag of spiles, and sap pots.

The sap simmers slowly on wood stoves across the cabins. No rush. No shortcuts. Just a small, patient ritual that marks the thawing of winter.

"We've never made tons and tons of syrup, but to have that to look forward to — it's just super special."

It's exactly the kind of practice NSWWT's Working Forest Community Easements are built to protect. Healthy maple stands. Families connected to the land. Traditions worth keeping.

Our land stewards come from a variety of backgrounds and hold a range of values, but they all share one thing: a deep love for Nova Scotia’s forests.

Woodlands are so much more than just trees – they are habitats for wildlife, places of work and livelihood, classrooms, and spaces for connection and reflection. They hold generations of family histories and community traditions.

We believe that’s worth protecting.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Community Conversation in Earltown NS last weekend! It was wonderful to see such a great turnout and engage in thoughtful discussions about working woodlands and conservation. Nearly 50 community members participated in the conversation, followed by a beautiful winter snowshoe with local land stewards Susan and Rodney, and indulged in the seriously good treats from .

Special thanks to Greg from North Nova Forestry Co-op and to David Baxter, an NSWWT land steward, for sharing their stories and photos. We're also grateful to all the NSWWT land stewards who came out and helped make the day such a success.

We're so thankful to this amazing community for supporting our mission and for taking the time to connect, learn, and enjoy the woods together!

This month marked an exciting milestone as the NSWWT team visited our newly acquired woodland in Pleasant River!

Spanning nearly 500 acres, this property will be restored as a demonstration forest: a living example of how healthy, productive forests and conservation can go hand in hand. Completed on December 19, 2025, this acquisition marks NSWWT’s first-ever property purchase and represents nearly 12.5% of our goal to protect 4,000 acres by Spring 2026.

Thanks to our partners at Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute, Parks Canada and Southwest Nova Biosphere Region for making this milestone possible.

Join us for a forest walk as part of our Community Conversation on January 31!

We’ll be heading out onto the trails at Free Spirit Farm, just outside Earltown, where our hosts, Sue and Rodney, will guide us through their woodland. Their property includes wetlands, old fields, a highbush blueberry orchard, and over 100 acres of mixed Wabanaki–Acadian forest — all connected by an extensive and well-loved trail system.

During the walk, we’ll visit an old-growth hemlock stand along a tributary of the Waugh’s River and explore how ecological forestry, natural regeneration, and protected riparian areas all come together on the ground.

📅 Saturday, January 31, from 1:00-4:00 PM
📍 Earltown Community Centre & Free Spirit Farm
