National Wildlife Centre Canada

National Wildlife Centre Canada The National Wildlife Centre (NWC) works at the intersection of humans, native wild animals, and the environment with a focus on One Health.

We exist to help native wildlife through a variety of programs aimed at conservation goals to protect ecosystems, populations of wild animals, and the health of individual animals through educating the public, creating collaborative opportunities for scientists and rehabilitators, and by providing training to students, veterinarians, rehabilitators, and the public. Move-in day at the fawn barn.

This fawn is ready for a bigger space where she’ll continue to grow, explore, and prepare for life in the wild. Every step of rehabilitation brings the fawns one step closer to returning to nature, where they belong.

A disturbed nest. A 24-hour wait. No returning mom.

After giving this Eastern Cottontail family every chance to reunite, these babies were admitted to our wildlife hospital for care.

Cottontail nests are often hidden in lawns and gardens. Before starting yard work, take a moment to look carefully. No one can do a better job than mom at raising the babies, so we always try to reunite or give time for mom to return. If you find a nest or need advice, call our wildlife hotline for guidance.

We are incredibly grateful to The Eric S. Margolis Foundation for their generous support of our wildlife hospital and the thousands of wild animals who depend on us each year. This funding will help provide essential medical supplies and support the many ongoing costs associated with operating a wildlife hospital.

The Eric S. Margolis Foundation's commitment to animal welfare helps ensure that animals receive the compassionate, expert medical and surgical care they need for a second chance at life in the wild.

On behalf of our patients, staff, volunteers, and supporters, thank you for believing in our mission and helping us care for wildlife when they need it most. Together, we are making a difference - one wild patient at a time.

A look back at one of this spring’s successful releases.

After spending the winter in our care, this Virginia Opossum was ready to return to the wild.

Did you know? The phrase “”playing possum”” comes from a real survival strategy. When faced with extreme fear or stress, an opossum can enter an involuntary comatose-like state, appearing dead and even emitting a foul odour to discourage predators.

Mealtime is serious business when you’re growing up wild.

While some managed to keep things relatively tidy, one patient seemed to think wearing lunch was part of the experience. We’ll let you guess who. 👀

Knock knock… back in the wild.

This Pileated woodpecker was brought to the National Wildlife Centre after being found injured and suspected to have been hit by a vehicle. After receiving care from our wildlife veterinary team and time to recover, he was moved to our new aviary where he rebuilt his strength and completed flight testing before release.

Once confirmed that he was flying well, this little drummer was released back home to the forest where he belonged.
