Shortly before midnight on May 26, Langley RCMP responded to reports of shots fired in the 5400-block of Brydon Crescent. Officers and first responders located a wounded 47-year-old man and attempted aid, but he died at the scene. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team assumed conduct of the investigation within hours. IHIT investigators interviewed witnesses, pieced together the events leading up to the shooting, and arrested Hopkins-Jones on May 30. The second-degree murder charge was formally approved the following day.
IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong stated the arrest was made possible by witnesses who came forward and by close coordination between IHIT and policing partners across the Lower Mainland. Investigators have described the killing as an isolated incident in which the accused and the victim were known to one another.

Less than a year before the Langley shooting, Hopkins-Jones was facing a murder charge in Kamloops. At approximately 5:08 a.m. on September 27, 2025, Kamloops RCMP were called to the 700-block of Notre Dame Drive after a man was found seriously injured near a bus shelter. Jason Pinette, 39, was transported to hospital in critical condition and did not survive. Hopkins-Jones was identified as the suspect, arrested, and charged with second-degree murder on October 8, 2025.
The charge did not proceed to trial. On March 27, 2026, the BC Prosecution Service stayed the charge against Hopkins-Jones, stating there had been a material change in circumstances meaning the charge assessment standard was no longer met. Pinette's family and the Kamloops community had no further recourse through the courts in connection with his death.

Nine years ago, Calgary police documented a violent domestic incident involving Hopkins-Jones. At approximately 9 p.m. on August 24, 2017, a pickup truck Hopkins-Jones was driving passed through an intersection in the community of Chaparral when a woman exited the moving vehicle and fell onto the roadway. The vehicle drove over her.
Hopkins-Jones then stopped, got out, and attempted to force her back inside the truck. Bystanders on scene physically intervened to stop him. He fled before police arrived. Officers located him and attempted a traffic stop, but he evaded them.
Hopkins-Jones, then 28, surrendered to Calgary police on September 4, 2017. He was charged with assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued by a peace officer, and seven counts of failing to comply with a court order.
Hopkins-Jones is next scheduled to appear in court on June 5, 2026, in connection with the Langley second-degree murder charge.
