Can you believe this? Instead of taking responsibility for the housing shortage, the federal government has found a new scapegoat: the Middle East.

During a session in the Commons, Housing Minister Gregor Robertson claimed that it’s "no surprise" Canadians are struggling to find homes because of the war in Iran.

This isn't just a political spin; it's an insult to every Canadian. While families are delaying marriage and putting off having children because they can’t afford a roof over their heads, the Minister is offering excuses instead of solutions.

We aren't bank machines, and we won't accept "geopolitics" as a reason for why we can't afford to live in our own country. Homes are for people, not for political excuses.

Granville Strip vacancy rate stays high at 24.9 percent in January 2026 👀

That’s almost double the 12.7 percent vacancy rate for all of Downtown Vancouver.

SFU prof Andy Yan says the empty storefronts are due to high rents, taxes, triple net leases, and public safety worries. Half of all service calls in the area happen on Granville.

Business owners are struggling with the cost of running a business and perceptions of crime. Violent offences in the downtown core are up over eight percent.

Isn’t that the first sign of a recession according to the movie the big short? 🤔

Prominent real estate research expert Dr. Wendy Waters shared her analysis on the unsustainable growth of government jobs in Canada.

Important to note that when government jobs grow faster than those in the private sector, this creates higher tax burdens and impacts affordability.

Her findings below:

➡️ "BC's provincial government payroll grew the most of any province in the most recent 10 years of data (to year end 2024). 85% growth in provincial government jobs. This contrasts with a 27% increase in overall jobs in that decade.

As British Columbians struggle to make sense of the budget, I thought this might be helpful.

More context:
➡️ The federal government nationally has grown their labour force by 41%. This contrasts to employment growth in all sectors nationally at 16%.

➡️ Alberta actually had fewer government jobs in 2024 compared to 2014. Alberta with a population of approximately 5 million has 23,000 fewer provincial government employees as BC with a population of 5.7 million. In ratio terms, Alberta has 5.5 government employees per 1000 residents. BC has nearly 9.

➡️ Ontario also has 5.5 government employees per 1000 and its provincial government employment has grown at nearly the identical rate as overall employment."

Former Vancouver mayor & coroner Larry Campbell — paid nearly 💰$200K by the B.C. government to study chronic Downtown Eastside issues — says many non-profit agency leaders admitted: “We don’t know where the money’s going.”

💸 Estimates suggest between $6M–$14M per day in public taxpayer funds flow into the area, with poorly tracked outcomes or coordinated services. Some organizations are resistant to evaluation of success metrics, Campbell added.

🏚️ Campbell’s early takeaway: government shouldn’t keep buying rundown hotels used for on-site drug and alcohol use.
