So you have been hearing about the Brant Music Festival and you want to participate, but you don’t play an instrument, and you only sing in the shower. You are wondering if you can learn the “Minute Waltz” by April 6, but you realize that Chopin’s clock was wrong and his “Minute” is actually 2 minutes and 17 seconds long. Well, have I got a deal for you!! Everyone, and I means EVERYONE can participate in the Brant Music Festival’s Speech Arts classes. I can hear you ... and you are wondering, “what is Speech Arts?”
Speech Arts is a multidisciplinary discipline that focuses on the performance and interpretation of literature, effective communication, and public speaking. Speech Arts combines the artistic expression of theatre with the practical skills of oral communication.
Speech arts involves several key areas:
Literary Performance: Interpreting and performing various forms of literature, including poetry, prose, and monologues.
Public Speaking: Crafting and delivering original speeches to persuade, inform, or entertain an audience.
Storytelling: Using personal experiences or folklore to connect with listeners and shape a compelling narrative.
Improvisation: Developing the ability to think on your feet and react creatively in the moment.
Vocal Technique: Mastering diction, articulation, projection, and vocal variety (pitch, tone, and pace).
So, now you want to sign up for Speech Arts. I knew you would! So here is what you need to do ... write a short speech, or find your favourite poem that you want to memorize over the next 7 weeks. (Poems need to have family friendly themes and language.) Go to www.brantmusicfestival.com and register yourself (and your poem) in the Speech Arts classes.
Still a little hesitant about getting up in front of an adjudicator, sign up your children. I guarantee they will have fun taking your place on stage and reciting Alligator Pie for you.
Speech Arts classes will be held, April 8th and 9th at Fairview United Church. Register by February 22 at 11:59 pm. (Register in two classes to be considered for scholarships.)
