Turtle nesting season is fast approaching. We are trying to document the first day each turtle species is seen nesting in Brantford-Brant. Please contact Brant For Turtles if you have seen a nest being laid.

If you need a nest protector, we have a stockpile ready for use by the Community at no cost. We can provide instructions on how to install them.

Thank you to the nearly 50 people who joined us Saturday for the 2026 Turtle Workshop. We learned a bit about our local turtles and the great work that Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre and Kayanase are doing in our Community. We managed to build 48 turtle nest protectors and raised $90 to be split between the OTCC and Kayanase! The nest protectors are available for free to the community. Thank you everyone!

Special thanks to the Brant Rod & Gun Club for providing the venue. We look forward to doing this again next year.

Turtles are out and about and may be on a road near you…

Multiple injured turtles arrived today including this big boy who came out of brumation not doing too well due to an infection as a result of an injury present when he went into brumation.

Much thanks to the kwhumanesociety for picking up this guy and our amazing volunteer driver for rushing him out.

He will spend some time with us receiving antibiotics and supporting treatment for a while until he is fully healed.

This is big news for turtles, tortoises, and a few other species. Hopefully smaller pet stores will follow and stop the trade of wild animals as pets.

🐢 This is HUGE. 🎉

PetSmart has officially ended the sale of turtles and tortoises—an achievement made possible only by years of advocacy from this community.

These wild animals have highly specialized needs and can outlive their guardians. When kept as pets, they suffer. When surrendered or abandoned, shelters and rescuers get overwhelmed.

Since World Animal Protection Canada's first meeting with PetSmart in 2022, we've seen real change: a new animal welfare policy and multiple wild species removed from sale. 🧡

Drop a 🐢 if you're with us to keep protecting wild animals from cruelty!

Great information to share from Kayanase!

Thinking about sunshine, still water, and releasing baby turtles back where they belong. Pure joy. ☀️🐢✨
Did you know Kayanase can rescue endangered Turtle Nests?
We also offer Turtle Nest Protection Nets!

🌿 Very soon, it will be Turtle Nesting Season in Ontario! 🐢💛
Every spring, Ontario’s turtles begin an important journey, finding the perfect place to lay their eggs.

📅 When does nesting happen?
Turtle nesting in Ontario typically begins in mid‑May and continues through mid‑July, with June being the peak month.
Some turtles may even start as early as early May, depending on weather and region.

🌞 Where do turtles lay their eggs?
Female turtles look for sunny, sandy, or gravelly spots near water. Road shoulders, agricultural fields, beaches, and shorelines often become nesting hotspots, even though these areas can be dangerous.

🚸 Why do we see turtles crossing roads?
During nesting season, female turtles travel long distances to reach good nesting sites, which often means crossing roads. Many species are at risk, and road mortality is a major threat.

🪺 How can we help?
Slow down near wetlands and ponds
Watch for turtles on roads during May–July
Only assist a turtle if it’s safe — and always move it in the direction it was heading
Never disturb a natural nest unless you have proper permits

💚 Protecting nesting turtles helps ensure these ancient, at‑risk species thrive for generations to come.
