🚨 REMINDER: West Fraser Open House Tomorrow! 🌲

The GROW team wanted to ensure you're prepped on what is at stake with the proposed harvest and the potential of the CHFR program.

We'll be attending the West Fraser Open House and providing handouts to attendees to educate people walking in on what is at stake and what questions you should be asking.

As a heads up, it's not just West Fraser this time.

There will also be government representatives in the room and they need to hear your voice and your concerns around the proposed harvest of our trails, and the CHFR program.

🚨 Bragg Creek’s Trees and Trails Are In The Crosshairs — Again.

Alberta’s new Community Hazardous Fuel Reduction (CHFR) program targets a 5km buffer around Bragg Creek — and based on history, we have a hunch as to what that usually means:

👉 Clearcutting.
👉 More logging.
👉 More forest lost in the region.

And that’s on top of the harvest already scheduled for as early as 2026 that could affect our beloved trails. If nothing changes, we could lose nearly all natural trails east of Moose Mountain Road.

Let’s be crystal clear:

🌲 279 km of world-class trails
🌲 $10–82M in annual tourism impact
🌲 1,000+ daily users
🌲 100,000+ volunteer hours
🌲 Alberta’s most accessible outdoor rec zone for 1.4M Calgarians

🔥 It’s not just a forest—it’s a vital piece of our economy, lifestyle, and identity.

🚨 Your Voice Matters: Attend the May 14 Open House to Help Protect West Bragg and Moose Mountain Trails

The Alberta Government recently launched the Community Hazardous Fuel Reduction (CHFR) program—a wildfire risk reduction initiative under the Alberta Wildfire strategy.

The focus? A 5km buffer zone around Bragg Creek. 🤯

What does that mean for us? The details are vague, but here’s what we do know: 👇 
In Kananaskis and near communities, “fuel reduction” usually means clearcutting. 
Nearly all mature forest in the northern West Bragg area is already scheduled to be logged between 2031–2040. 
Put it together, and it’s highly likely we’ll see even more massive clearcuts in the northern West Bragg trail network—soon.

This is a huge concern. If the 2026 harvest and the future-sequenced blocks are clearcut, we’ll lose almost all natural, forested trails east of Moose Mountain Road.

We can still make a difference—but only if we show up.

Your voices have made a difference before. Thanks to your engagement last year, West Fraser reduced cutblock sizes, moved clearcuts away from trails and added visual buffers. Now we need to send a message to the Government as well.

This area is more than just forest—it’s Alberta’s most accessible, multi-use wilderness recreation zone:

✅ Only easily accessible wilderness trail network for 1.4 million Calgarians 

✅ 279 km of multi-use trails:  • Mountain Biking  • Nordic Skiing  • Hiking / Running  • Snowshoeing  • Fat Biking  • Equestrian 
✅ On average, over 1,000 visitors per day 
✅ Over $7.5M and 100,000+ volunteer hours invested 
✅ Contributes and estimated $10–82 million/year to Alberta’s economy

This document has been more anticipated than the Oasis Reunion Tour for trail users in Bragg Creek!

West Fraser 🪵 has released their “What We Heard” document in response to the May 8th and 9th open houses.

First off, we’d like to thank all 620 people (on their records) and the many, many more of you 🙏 that came off-the-record to voice your concerns.

West Fraser told us this is by far, the biggest turn out they have ever seen to an open house. 👌

Way to go, home team! 🤜🤛

The “What We Heard” document outlines their consultative process with GROW, , , the alterations they have to the proposed harvest as a result, and some next steps in the consultation process before their next open house.

We’ve done some heavy analysis of this document and provided an in-depth summary of what is going on and highlighted our concerns that still exist with the alterations.

Moving forward - we are going to be working together with West Fraser to continue to address our concerns.

We’ll also be reaching out to the powers that be (minsters, MLAs, etc.) to get West Fraser “Reciprocal Volume” or in basic terms:

Trees 🌲 somewhere else that doesn’t have a dedicated user group, isn’t protected by a Kananaskis Conservation Pass, and that don’t affect our trails, outdoor experience, the economic benefit to the area, and the good times we all love.

We’ve met with - The Banff/Kananaskis MLA to kick things off.

We’ll be meeting with Todd Loewen (The Forestry Minister) on November 26th, and we’re going to push to protect this area for the foreseeable future.

GROW is going to need your support in the weeks to come and we will keep you posted every step of the way.

Settle in for some information about how the creation of single species, single age forests (post harvest managed forestry) creates greater wildfire danger than the multi-species, multi-age forest that currently covers our recreational trail network.

Last night we had about 300 people come out to march in solidarity with to support our trail networks and . Friendships were made, and we all got a chance to reflect on what these areas mean to us. There was kids hiking and biking, there was people from all demographics and ethnicities, and many different types of trail users that all came together for one common goal. To show our government that these trails are used by a broad spectrum of people, and the impacts of logging will be detrimental to a massive community here in Calgary. Please write your MLA, sign the petitions, so and speak up against clear cutting in our trail networks. Whether you use these areas or not, your hard earned tax dollars have contributed and built these recreation areas into what they have become, let’s not let them destroy what we have created. Here’s a snippet of some comments and drawings that a few people left last night.

This is a video posted from instagram account .bowriver . It is from a cut section just out of the Station Flats parking lot. This cut was 12 years ago. If not halted this is the environment that your trails will be passing through or adjacent (many without buffers) to. Ugly? yes, but also dry, hot in the sun, exposed to wind, and fat bike grooming...fuggetaboutit!

Per the July 20th 2023 mandate from Premiere Danielle Smith, Minister Todd Loewen (Ministry of Forestry and Parks Alberta) has been tasked with:

- Investing an additional $5 million in trail upgrades for Kananaskis Country and building new trails and campgrounds across Alberta

- Bringing stakeholders together to develop a Crown lands recreation and conservation strategy to expand public access while protecting natural spaces

- Enabling the expansion of trails, campsites, and other public land use opportunities by Alberta entrepreneurs and other organizations.

Please write to Minister Loewen and refer to this mandate. What an opportunity for an easy inexpensive win! Gain favor with the hundreds of thousands of Albertans that use these trails.
