The goats love when we trim branches (so they don't grow into their shelters). Fresh maple leaves are a favorite.

Sometimes caring for goats will give you a heart attack.

Last week, Ann suddenly stopped eating and showed signs that she was very unwell. During this emergency, which lasted several days, she needed specialized treatment from our farm vets.

Through their analysis, they also discovered that she had ingested some rubber (although we have no idea what it was from or where she found it).

Thankfully, Ann pulled through and has bounced back in an astonishingly quick fashion. We are incredibly grateful — although our frayed nerves could definitely use a holiday. 🌿

Every day after Jive completes breakfast, when the weather is favorable, we open his door and he chooses whether to hop out to explore and greet the other turkeys close by. Jive is an elder turkey who was rescued ten years ago.

Fern squeaked out of her gate last night. By the earth on her face we can tell she had fun rooting and traversing all around the sanctuary. At breakfast she ran back into her enclosure like a good girl. Another adventure in the books.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sugarbear.

This beautiful soul arrived at the sanctuary as a piglet after tumbling from a transport truck and being rescued. Following his recovery, Sugarbear embraced sanctuary life to the fullest. He was kind, playful, and shared a special bond with Lola, the pig he chose to live with.

Sugarbear loved belly rubs, apples, watermelon, and bananas. He brought joy to everyone who knew him.

Like many commercially bred farm pigs, Sugarbear developed severe arthritis and mobility issues. Eventually, he suffered a fracture in a lower leg bone. At nearly 800 pounds, his condition became impossible to overcome. After reviewing his X-rays, our veterinarian concluded that Sugarbear would not be able to heal from his injuries or regain the ability to walk.

Sugarbear passed peacefully, surrounded by those who loved him. He was five years old.

We are both heartbroken and frustrated. As our veterinarian observed, "These commercial pigs have every good trait needed to live a proper life bred out of them, with the focus being solely on growing to be slaughtered at six months of age, or shortly thereafter."

What is too often forgotten is that living, feeling, intelligent individuals are born into these bodies and suffer the consequences.

For us, Sugarbear's story is yet another reason to choose plant-based options.

We love you, Sugarbear. You will always be part of this sanctuary and part of our hearts. *Photo from when he was smaller and living with Prince.
