Important news re Dalmatian diets.

UPDATE:
Good afternoon, it appears the intention of this post was misunderstood. The intention of this post was to inform our clients that a new stone was found and could be linked to a certain compound ( choline bitartrate). This compound is found in supplements as well as some foods. It was not intended to make it sound like a common issue or a reason for you to switch your pet's food without talking with your veterinarian. Thank you for all who kindly commented, clearing up some of these concerns. If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to us or your family veterinarian.

BREAKING NEWS -- use caution when feeding your dog fresh food from brands such as The Farmers Dog, JustFoodForDogs and Nom Nom⚠️

The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine Urolith Center has discovered a NEW urinary stone and the likely cause🔬
The UMN Urolith Center is the laboratory we use for all bladder stone analysis that are conducted for HAH patients and we recently received notification of this new information.

These new stones are called "calcium tartrate tetrahydrate" (CTT) uroliths according to Dr. Lulich (co-director of UMN Urolith Center). Canine patients get "choline bitartrate" (the main compound in CTT uroliths) from fresh dog food and supplements recommended for dogs that eat homemade food.
The data collected by Dr. Lulich and his team showed a link between choline bitartrate found in some of the most popular fresh dog food brands -- including The Farmers Dog, JustFoodForDogs and Nom Nom -- and the newly discovered CTT uroliths.

This discovery was published in April 2025 in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

I don’t often share personal stories here, but Fudge was my heart dog as some ppl say. Just so extra special and so connected to me. He was my 3rd Dalmatian but my first non rescue. And my first from a responsible and ethical breeder.

Today he would have been 23yrs old. 💗 I still have a working relationship and great friendship with his breeder. I am proud of her dedication to the breed and years of commitment. I know co-own a Dal with her and have a rescue Dal too. Plus we have a registered Parson Russell Terrier in the pack. Every dog since and probably every dog I will ever have, I think about Fudge and how he would be with the new dog. And I think about what they would think about Fudge. Rescue locally was much busier back during Fudge’s time. He was a big part of my rescue efforts. His temperament was so well balanced. He wasn’t a bully or a pushover, and his confidence was comforting to the rescues WE helped. He happily acted as “test dog” to help me measure the temperment and behaviour of a Dal in need. He truly did provide support and guidance for the ones who needed to learn about trust, training, manners, and even love.

So as I celebrate my special boy, I’ll share this goodbye video with you that I made when it was time to say goodbye. So loved and so special in so many ways, and truly an important part of the rescue work I did then.

Please note updated info:

This lovely 7 yr old girl, Piper, is looking for a new home. It’s no fault of her own, however she’s finding it difficult to cope with a now crawling toddler in the house to the point that that she is constantly stressed. Piper is very sweet and loves to cuddle with her adult family members.

A home with no small children, cats or other dogs would be preferred as she can be possessive with her “things” with other animals. A professional assessment and possible training interventions to manage Piper’s tendency to resource guard will be provided to the people in her new home.

Piper is currently living with her family in Ontario but comes from a well respected breeder in New Brunswick who will take her back to ensure she finds a new family who is the right match for her needs. For this reason, applicants from Ontario and the East Coast will be considered.

If you are interested in Piper, please email Carola at [email protected].

Piper is a littermate of one of my boys. If my home was an environment that could meet her needs, I’d definitely consider adding her to my own pack. Let’s help find her a new home. 💗

Curtesy Post!
Please check out this pretty Liver boy in Southern Maine.
Too many ppl don’t want to travel to adopt a dog anymore. They want their rescue dogs delivered. It’s not Pizza! Shipped to your town pet adoption is a red flag 🚩
Maine is not too far to drive for a great pup. Avi (Avacado) has spent some time with a trainer, learned a lot of basic commands and tricks, and had a behavioral review. Please contact the training company who has been so generous to foster and teach him.

When there are so many dogs looking for homes, rescuing is a great thing to do. But if the type of dog you’re looking for is NOT available through rescue, finding an ethical and responsible breeder is perfectly acceptable. It’s what everybody should be doing if puppy mills and backyard breeders weren’t creating overpopulation problems.

So I want to share this courtesy post of a sweet boy available through a very good breeder in central Alberta, near Sylvan Lake. Rodeo is an adorably handsome pup who will be 1yr old this month. He has spent the majority of that time with his breeders, where he competed in confirmation shows and earned his Canadian Championship. It was decided that he should continue on to be a wonderful pet for someone.

Unfortunately for Rodeo, the dog in the home who purchased him did not welcome him, despite the owners efforts. He’s now back at “home” where he has always done great with their pack. He will stay until a new home is found.

The breeders would like to keep him relatively close by, somewhere in Alberta if possible. He has excellent health and temperament. He is not a rescue boy that comes with “issues” that a new owner would have to work on. His breeders put in the time and effort with planning his litter, health testing parents, as well as training and socializing him. He’s practically perfect.

If you’re serious and want to learn more, you can contact his breeder
