Wild Avalon Expeditions

Wild Avalon Expeditions Highly immersive and expert-led Zodiac tours near St. John's, Newfoundland, run by mariner of 30 years Michael O'Brien and PhD ornithologist Taylor Brown

08/19/2026

There is still time to sign up for Puffin Extravaganza with us before the end of the Puffin fledging period!

Puffin Extravaganza is a full-circle educational conservation experience in which we take a sunset cruise to mingle with puffins near their colony in a comfortable Zodiac, and then when we come ashore we go out searching for stranded baby puffins (pufflings) that have just left the nest, as part of the Puffin & Petrel Patrol NL! Our tour is guided by expert local mariner Michael O'Brien and Dr. Taylor Brown, who studied puffin stranding behaviour for her PhD!

Guys... Would you L👀K at all these jellyfish 🪼!!!!
We were out looking for shearwaters about 3 nautical miles offshore when we noticed a large light patch in the water. When we approached to investigate, Captain Michael recognized it as a Jellyfish bloom!! 😍 Thank goodness we had the bathyscope on board, because it allowed us to get this fantastic look at these beautiful animals, which were gathering by the thousands in about 500' of water. You can even see a couple that have an unusual number of go**ds (the circular structures at their centre) - the typical number is four!

Pretty neat, huh?

"I'd say we're past a million" said our young guest who tried to count the number of puffins on our Puffin Extravaganza sunset cruise last evening 🤩

While we didn't see a million puffins, we might as well have, because we lost count 😁 they were absolutely everywhere at the colony! Plus, we got the bonus of seeing a number of Common Murre chicks with their dads! What an adorable treat ☺️

We didn't find any stranded pufflings, but that's a good thing! It means they successfully made it out to sea. And we still had a fantastic time, because the search is more than half of the fun ☺️

Puffin Extravaganza runs until the end of this month - book with us to be guided by experts and enjoy the sunset puffin cruise, or volunteer with Puffin & Petrel Patrol NL ! A portion of proceeds from Puffin Extravaganza go to CPAWS-NL for help with running Puffin Patrol and other valuable conservation programs, and a portion go to The Rock Wildlife Rescue for all that they do to save injured and orphaned wildlife in the province!

Are you dreaming of rescuing baby puffins AND floating amongst thousands of colourful adult puffins in a small boat at their level? Well, this could be for you!
Bookings are open now for Puffin Extravaganza tours starting TOMORROW! But hurry, because pufflings can only be found until the end of August.

At Wild Avalon Expeditions, we believe that ecotourism should give back to wildlife and conservation. That is why, when you book a Puffin Extravaganza tour with us, we donate portions of the proceeds to both The Rock Wildlife Rescue and to CPAWS-NL. This tour gives you the opportunity to volunteer for the Puffin & Petrel Patrol NL with guidance directly from Taylor, and includes transportation to all the most reliable spots for finding pufflings PLUS a memorable sunset cruise on the water with Capt. Michael to mingle with the thousands of puffins that call this beautiful place home.

This isn't just a tour. When you sign up for Puffin Extravaganza, you are participating in a real conservation initiative, guided by one person who did their PhD on puffin stranding and another person who has grown up watching them his whole life!

Late this morning, a puffin fledgling (puffling!) was found stranded by a kind and concerned person in Witless Bay, and as a local with lots of puffin handling experience and permission from CPAWS-NL, Taylor was asked to assess and release it. However, the poor thing had something neurological going on, so instead of being released it was brought to The Rock Wildlife Rescue for further assessment and treatment.

The Rock Wildlife Rescue is one of only two wildlife rehabilitation centres on the island of Newfoundland, and they save countless animals every year, including of course any injured pufflings that are found by volunteers of the Puffin & Petrel Patrol NL. The rescue, as well as CPAWS-NL (which runs the Puffin Patrol), deserve all the recognition and support in the world for what they do to support conservation in this province.

Here at Wild Avalon Expeditions, we believe that ecotourism should give back directly to the conservation initiatives that make our industry possible. When you book a Puffin Extravaganza! Tour with us, we donate portions of the proceeds to both The Rock Wildlife Rescue and to CPAWS-NL. Our Puffin Extravaganza! Tour gives you the opportunity to volunteer for the Puffin Patrol with guidance directly from Taylor, and includes transportation to all the most reliable spots for finding pufflings plus a memorable sunset puffin cruise on the water to become one with the thousands of puffins that call this beautiful place home.

Bookings are open now for tours starting on Saturday! But hurry... Pufflings can only be found until the end of August.

This isn't just a tour. When you sign up for Puffin Extravaganza, you are participating in a real conservation initiative, guided by a PhD in puffin behaviour!

How many fish did our guest Wayne get on his line at the same time this morning?! Stay tuned to find out!! 😱

The cod were THICK, as Newfoundlanders would say (meaning "plentiful"), in the harbour this morning! Everyone took home with them a share of fresh filleted cod for supper - and on a beautiful day like this, what could be better?!

We jig a little on some of our Zodiac wildlife tours, like this one, but you can also book a cod jigging expedition with us to catch your fill of fresh fish to take home!

We were lucky that today, for the first time in over a month, not only did we SEE dolphins - they put on an absolutely spectacular show for us as well 🤩❤️🐬 watch as they jump clear out of the water on multiple occasions! Now those are some happy marine mammals ☺️

Alright so WITHOUT CHEATING 😜 does anyone know what this is?
We sure didn't know what it was when it came up on our cod jigger from the bottom, in 150' of water! What an amazing organism that we were so excited to learn about, after putting it back in the ocean where it belongs!

Answer ⬇️
Basket star, most likely Northern Basket Star. They are closely related to starfish and brittle stars (all are echinoderms) 😊

Spied on by an Orca -
In a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, we managed to spy back at these 3 orcas that came to spy on us! Thanks to our handy dandy bathyscope, we were able to truly look them in the eye and greet them at their own level. If only we could converse with them, we wonder what amazing things they could tell us...
