🎤 THE VOICES BEHIND STCPA 🐴❤️

There’s a little more history behind the voices you hear over the STCPA speakers than you might know.

Shirley Smith has been part of the team penning world for 35 years.

Twenty-seven years ago, after a knee replacement temporarily took her out of the saddle, Shirley found herself in the announcer’s booth at an STCPA show in Bigger. She picked up the microphone for the first time—and 27 years later, she’s still one of the familiar voices of STCPA. 🎤 Flags up!!

Over those years, Shirley has called countless teams, kept shows moving, kept riders and spectators informed, and made sure the businesses and individuals supporting our association received the recognition they deserve.

But this past season, we decided it was time to add another voice.

Tiffany Brown has been part of the penning world for 17 years, and with more sponsors continuing to come on board, there were more names than ever that we wanted to make sure were being recognized throughout our weekends.

So Tiffany picked up the microphone for Friday night sorting.

And there was another pretty great reason for that change…

It gave Shirley the chance to put down the microphone on Friday nights, get back in the saddle and go penning herself. ❤️🐴

After 27 years of calling everyone else’s runs, we think she’s earned a few of her own!

Now Shirley continues to be the familiar voice behind our sanctioned shows, while Tiffany handles Friday nights—helping keep things moving, making sure our sponsors are heard, and giving Shirley some time back in the pen.

35 years in the sport for Shirley.
27 years behind the microphone.
17 years in the sport for Tiffany.
And a new chapter behind the mic.

Two voices, a whole lot of years in the penning world, and one shared love for this sport and the community that surrounds it. ❤️

🌾 A little STCPA throwback for your afternoon! 🐴

While our farmers are out there pulling off the last of their fields in this heat — and scrolling while the GPS does its thing, because who doesn’t have GPS now? 😂 — here’s a little throwback to keep you entertained!

Thinking about trying Team Penning or Sorting with STCPA? Here are some of the questions we’ve been getting!

❓ What kind of Sorting happens Friday nights?
👉 3-Man, 2-Gate Sorting!

❓ How much does it cost?
💰 Friday Sorting — $40 per run
💰 2+ Team Penning — $20 per run

❓ Can anyone, of any age, come and try it?
YES! 🙌

Friday Sorting and our non-sanctioned 2+ Class are open to all ages.

To compete in the sanctioned Team Penning classes Saturday and Sunday, riders must be 12 years or older.

❓ What is the 2+ Class?
The 2+ Class is our NON-SANCTIONED newbie Team Penning class! 🤠

👉 $20 per run
👉 ALL DRAWS — no need to find teammates
👉 Maximum 3 entries
👉 Open to all ages
👉 Beginner friendly
👉 NO Canadian membership required
👉 80% payout

It's a great place to get started!

❓ Is there somewhere I can learn before competing?
YES!

We offer a Mini Clinic Friday at 4 PM — perfect for learning how it works, getting some practice or trying out that young horse!

❓ Do I need my own horse?
Yes. You will need to bring your own horse.

❓ What do I wear?
🤠 Western attire!
• Western shirt — long or short sleeves
• Jeans
• Appropriate riding boots
• Riders under 18 must wear a helmet

❓ Where are the shows held?
📍 All of our shows are held at Wheatfield.

❓ How much is an STCPA membership?

🤠 Adult — $35
🐴 Youth ages 13–16 — $10
🐮 12 & under — FREE

❓ What memberships do I need?

🐴 Friday Sorting:
• Valid SHF membership
• Valid STCPA membership
• Signed Wheatfield waiver
• Canadian membership is NOT required

🐴 Non-Sanctioned 2+ Team Penning:
• Valid STCPA membership
• Canadian membership is NOT required

🐴 Saturday & Sunday Sanctioned Team Penning:
• Valid STCPA membership
• Canadian membership IS required

❓ Can I be a beginner and still come out?
ABSOLUTELY! 🙌

That's exactly why we offer our Mini Clinic and non-sanctioned 2+ Class.

❓ I don't know anyone and don't have a team. Can I still enter?
YES!

There are draw options in Sorting and sanctioned Team Penning, and the 2+ Class is ALL DRAWS!

❓ How do entries and draws work?

🐮 FRIDAY SORTING:
For every picked team you enter, you must also enter a draw.
You can enter as a draw as many times as you want!

🐮 SANCTIONED TEAM PENNING:
You can have a maximum of 5 entries in each class.
At least ONE of those entries must be a draw.
Your remaining entries can be picked teams.

🐮 NON-SANCTIONED 2+ CLASS:
You can enter up to 3 times.
All 3 entries are DRAWS!

So don't worry if you don't have teammates lined up — you can still come pen! 🙌

❓ What number am I if I'm a brand-new penner?
You start as a #1.

❓ What do the class numbers mean?
The combined rating of all three riders cannot be higher than the class number.

For example, in a #8 Class, the three riders' numbers combined cannot exceed 8.

❓ How do I qualify for Finals?
Attend 3 shows — Saturday counts as one show and Sunday counts as one.

OR

Attend 2 shows and pay the $1,000 levy to qualify.

❓ What are the payouts?
💰 Non-Sanctioned 2+ — 80%
💰 Sorting — 70%
💰 Sanctioned Team Penning — 55%

❓ When do entries close?
Entries are due the Monday before the show!

❓ How do I enter?
📱 Enter through the SortArena app!

😂🐴 WHEN YOUR PRESIDENT IS WILLING TO COMMIT TO THE JOB…

A little throwback to our President, Chadrick Carley, giving it his all for the Best Dressed Costume Class! 🤠😂

But this time, the Directors are getting together for business!

Our STCPA Directors Meeting is September 13, and we’ll be sitting down to start getting things lined up for another great season.
