• Do your research on the caller
• Don't give out personal information

In recent years, Barrhead RCMP has seen a spike in gift card scams. Don’t give scammers a gift!

Gift cards are a popular target for scammers since they have fewer buyer protections compared to debit or credit cards. Minutes after a gift card redemption code is read to a scammer over the phone, the funds have been cashed and the money is gone & untraceable.

Remember: Legitimate agencies will NEVER ask for gift cards as payment. If a stranger asks for large sums of gift cards (even if they seem to be from a reputable agency), hang up and call Barrhead RCMP at 780-674-4848.

This holiday season, don't give criminals a present!

Have you received a “package waiting” text or email saying that you need to pay unexpected shipping or customs fees to receive your package?

Wait! This could be a scam!

While these messages often look legitimate, clicking any links could open your devices up to malware or cyber criminals. Always check the status of your package directly through the shipping company or seller’s official website.

Always be wary of urgent demands, spelling mistakes, generic greetings, or unusual payment types (like gift cards).
