Kelowna Pride Society grieves and stands in solidarity with Tumbler Ridge.
In the wake of recent violence, we are deeply troubled by the surge of transphobic commentary circulating on social media.
Let us be clear: violence is not caused by gender identity or Trans Identities. Attempts to weaponize tragedy to target Trans, Non-Binary, and Two-Spirit people are harmful, inaccurate, and unacceptable.
Moments of grief and shock do not excuse the spread of hate, misinformation, or dehumanization. Trans and gender-diverse communities already face disproportionate levels of violence, harassment, and erasure. Using tragedy as a pretext to further marginalize these communities compounds harm and puts lives at risk.
Kelowna Pride Society stands in solidarity with Trans, Non-Binary, and Two-Spirit people—here in the Interior and beyond. We affirm your dignity, your safety, and your right to exist without being scapegoated for violence you did not cause.
We call on community members to:
• Refrain from speculation, misinformation, and hateful commentary
• Challenge transphobia when it appears, both online and offline
• Centre care, accountability, and compassion in how we respond to harm
This is a moment to slow down, to grieve responsibly, and to remember that collective safety is built through solidarity—not blame.
We remain committed to fostering a community rooted in respect, truth, and care for all.
In solidarity,
Kelowna Pride Society
