PUBLIC NOTICE – CAUTIOUS USE OF FIRE

Heading into a warm and dry weekend, the Xeni Gwet’in First Nations Government would like to remind community members and visitors to use caution with any fire use within the community and surrounding areas.

Warm, dry, and windy conditions are increasing across the region. This is causing grass, brush, and forest fuels to dry out quickly, raising the risk of wildfire within the Xeni Gwet’in Caretaker and Declared Title Area.

Please be mindful:

* Category 2 and Category 3 open fires are not allowed. This includes open meadow/grass burning, large debris piles greater than 0.5m x 0.5 m, burn barrels and fireworks.
* Small campfires (Category 1) are allowed only when conditions are safe.
* Keep campfires small (no larger than 0.5 m x 0.5 m).
* Clear the area around your fire of grass and debris.
* Do not light fires in windy or unsafe conditions.
* Always ensure your fire is fully extinguished (cold to the touch) before leaving.

Please report any unattended fires or illegal burning.

* Call 1-800-663-5555 or dial *5555 on a cell to report a wildfire
* Call 1-877-952-7277 ( ) to report illegal burning
* Call 9-1-1 if the fire is an immediate danger
