ONTARIO SENIOR GAMES ASSOCIATION
District 8
May 2026 Member of the Month: Gary Meyers
Gary resides in Cornwall and is an enthusiastic participant in the Ontario Senior Games Association (OSGA) District 8 (D8) since 2024. He enjoys Cribbage, Golf and Table Tennis. He and his card partner earned the GOLD in the 2025 D8 Cribbage event.
Gary has made numerous community connections through his volunteer work in the Cornwall area. Volunteering gives a feeling of satisfaction and pride for being able to help an organization. It is both demanding and a rewarding experience. Gary was a Director for the Cornwall Senior Citizens Club. He is now their President.
He admits that he enjoys participating in the OSGA events because “it’s a great deal”: a onetime yearly nominal fee and you may compete in multiple events. Gary mentioned that he especially enjoys competing in the D8 Golf tournament. He feels that it is a wonderful way to share his time and stay connected with friends.
Participants would agree that maintaining relationships provides emotional support, reduces feelings of isolation and depression, and can improve cognitive function. Strong social ties can also contribute to a sense of purpose. Community connections are crucial for a senior’s physical and mental wellbeing. Gary suggests that seniors should grab a set of golf clubs, grab a tee time and join in the great game of golf. It is a great exercise: you spend a few hours on your feet walking through the course , which will have you walking approximately 6.4 km (4 miles), you are surrounded by nature, and you are bathed in sunlight ( vitamin D). This will contribute to your health in various ways: sleep better, lower blood pressure, decrease depression, boost creative thinking, and you will likely have less anxiety.
Unlike other sports, golf is personal. Most of the time, you play against yourself to try to beat your own previous best score. This makes this sport a lot of fun to work hard and try to do your best.
The OSGA Golf competition operates under specific rules which are designed to accommodate various skill levels for participants 55 and older. For the list of the OSGA golf rules, please visit the our website.
Gary encourages new OSGA D8 participants to laugh, enjoy yourself, and have fun.
We look forward to seeing Gary, new members, and our seasoned OSGA D8 members in these 2026 Summer Games.
