We have received reports of possible mangrove clearing on Cayo Pájaro, located within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

Cayo Pájaro was once designated as a Crown Reserve and bird sanctuary. Although the island was dereserved a few years ago, this does not reduce its ecological importance. Mangroves remain a critical habitat for marine life, coastal protection, and biodiversity.

Let us be clear: mangrove clearing in Belize is illegal without proper permits and environmental approval.

We urgently call on the relevant authorities to investigate this activity and take immediate action if any violations are found.

Our mangroves are not expendable. They protect our reefs, our flats, our fisheries, and our future.

Photos were taken and sent to us showing dredging activities happening inside the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. This activity is taking place near Zone F (Cayo Frances), which is within the marine reserve.

We are asking for clear answers from the Minister, the Mayor, and Hol Chan management and other relevant authorities:
How is this being allowed to happen inside a protected area?

Just a couple of weeks ago, Hon. Andre Perez publicly stated that he would not allow dredging in this area.
Yet today, dredging is clearly taking place.

We have contacted relevant authorities about the dredging activities and hope they take immediate action to stop this before more damage is done.

Our marine reserves exist to protect our environment, livelihoods, and future.
What changed, and who approved this?

We deserve transparency and accountability. Belize’s marine resources cannot continue to be sacrificed.

ACCSD Update | Request for a Meeting

Yesterday, December 17, 2025, on Reef TV, Hon. Andre Perez, Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation, stated that they never shy away from meetings.

In the spirit of openness and transparency, the Ambergris Caye Citizens for Sustainable Development (ACCSD) has officially sent a letter requesting a public meeting with the Minister and the entire Board of Trustees of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

We are requesting that this meeting take place by January 15, 2026.
This request reflects the growing public concern about the management and overall health of one of Belize’s most important marine reserves.

Below you will find:
• The official letter sent by ACCSD

We look forward to a constructive, transparent, and open dialogue in the best interest of our marine environment and the communities that depend on it.

“One day, some of the same people who stood by my side will betray the People of Belize…”

These words from George Cadle Price still echo today.
A reminder that leadership is about loyalty to the people, protecting what was built, and putting Belize first, always.

At ACCSD, we stand for transparency, accountability, and the public interest. History reminds us why that matters.
