NO!!!! 🤬 Join us in Seine Bight tonight to say a big fat NO to this proposed monstrosity of a resort complex near Riversdale!!

If this were fully occupied, we are looking at over 10,000 people. This development would choke off the entire rest of the peninsula. 3,000-4,000 units (hotel rooms, condos, houses), 400 boat slips, massive groin, digging out everything on the other side of the road.

We all remember seeing Mr. Albert Loewen at the meeting to discuss the detrimental impact of rock walls last year. Lawmakers, contractors and developers all have the environmental studies to prove what they are doing is hurting our precious ecosystem but they DO NOT CARE.

Placencia Village Council PVC STATEMENT on ENVIRONMENTAL CLEARANCE ISSUANCE

The communities of the Placencia Peninsula are outraged by the recent issuance of environmental clearance for dredging and reclamation activities to Seaboard Holdings Limited. This decision blatantly contradicts the understanding reached during numerous meetings with government agencies, where it was clearly communicated that all permits were to remain on hold pending completion of the peninsula coastal erosion study.

It is a slap in the face to our communities to see CEO of the Belize Department of the Environment - DOE Mr. Anthony Mai, sign off on such a clearance in direct disregard of those assurances. Equally troubling is the role of the Director of Mining, Mrs. Michelle Alvarez, and Mr. Alfred Cal of the Physical Planning Unit. Why was this permit to dredge and fill issued at all, when the government itself had committed to a pause until the study was finalized? Why was a permit for a seawall issued when it goes against the findings and recommendations of the study?

This action undermines public trust, disregards the voices of the communities most affected, and raises serious questions about accountability and transparency within the permitting process. We demand immediate answers from the DOE, the Mining Unit, and the Physical Planning Unit, and we call for the suspension of all dredging and reclamation approvals until the coastal erosion study is completed and its findings made public.

No permits for sand and gravel extraction along North Stann Creek River

By Aaron Humes: The Cabinet has decided not to issue permits for any newly proposed extraction sites along the North Stann Creek River in 2026.

Upon receiving information regarding the current status of sand and gravel extraction along the North Stann Creek River, the Cabinet has determined that a cautious and regulated approach is necessary.

Consequently, the Cabinet also recommended that, for the second quarter of 2026, a technical reassessment of identified bars should be conducted to determine eligibility and extraction limits.

The river flows through the northern Stann Creek District into Dangriga Town, discharging into the Caribbean Sea.

This is a big deal, everyone!
