🎶✨ Summer Arts Immersive 2026 | Dangriga ✨🎨
This summer, creativity came alive in Dangriga as the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) – Institute of Creative Arts partnered with two outstanding community initiatives to inspire the next generation through the arts.
🎵 Garifuna Youth Music Initiatives (GYMI) – Music Summer Workshop
Coordinators: James Lovell & Jason Guerrero
Eighteen young participants immersed themselves in Garifuna music, learning and performing 10 gospel songs in the Garifuna language while exploring four-part harmony—soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. They also brought the music to life through interpretive dance before proudly showcasing their talents during their very first gospel concert and recital.
🥁 Lirahunu Satuye – Community Dance Class
(Drumming, Art & Crafts, and Singing)
Coordinator: Desiree Pascual
Twenty students explored Garifuna artistic traditions by creating handcrafted jewellery and earrings, making John Canoe knee shells and miniature flags, and participating in drumming, dancing, and singing sessions. The program fostered creativity while promoting sustainability, cultural preservation, and appreciation for the richness and diversity of Garifuna heritage.
Together, we celebrate the power of culture to educate, empower, and unite. 🖤🤍💛
