Know Your Numbers: BDHA and BNTU Team Up to Look After the Health of Belize's Teachers
Our teachers spend every day looking after the wellbeing of Belize's children — but who's looking after theirs?
The Belize Diabetes and Hypertension Association (BDHA) believes that a healthy teacher is better able to educate the nation, which is why we partnered with the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) to bring free health screening directly to educators at a recent teachers' workshop in Sarteneja Village.
What we did
BDHA facilitated on-site glucose and blood pressure testing for teachers attending the workshop, giving them a quick, free, and judgment-free way to check two of the most important numbers in their health story. The testing was paired with an educational session covering what those numbers actually mean, the risk factors for diabetes and hypertension, and simple, practical steps teachers can take to stay ahead of both conditions.
For many teachers, it was the first time in a long while they'd had these numbers checked — and for some, the screening was the first step toward getting a condition they didn't know they had properly diagnosed and managed.
Why it matters
Teachers give so much of themselves to their students, their schools, and their communities. Long days, heavy workloads, and busy lives often mean personal health gets pushed to the bottom of the list. BDHA believes that has to change — because when our teachers are well, they're better equipped to keep showing up for Belize's children, year after year.
This is exactly the kind of partnership BDHA wants to keep building: meeting people where they already are — at their workshops, their union events, their everyday gatherings — and making health awareness simple, accessible, and stigma-free.
A big thank you
To the Belize National Teachers Union for opening the door to this collaboration, HECOPAB and the CHW and to every teacher in Sarteneja village who took a few minutes out of their workshop to know their numbers — thank you.
Thank you to Mr. Tony Herrera for being a Co-Sponsor of this event, helping with the cost of logistics.
Your health matters, and BDHA is proud to stand with you.
Know your numbers. Know your risk. Take control of your health.
