A couple of weeks ago, we had the privilege of paying a courtesy visit to the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA Fund) Head Office in Botswana, MVA Fund Botswana where we held fruitful discussions on potential areas of collaboration and partnership at Supreme Global Solutions Consulting.

The engagement provided an opportunity to share our vision for strengthening Botswana’s civil society sector and to explore how strategic partnerships can contribute to sustainable development outcomes. Among the key areas discussed was the upcoming Grantor-Grantee Forum, an initiative aimed at fostering stronger relationships, dialogue, learning, networking and collaboration between funding institutions and civil society organizations.

The Forum under the theme "Strengthening Botswana’s CSO Funding Ecosystem for Access, Compliance, and Collaboration will convene together funders and funding recipients in all their diversity and is anchored on critical thematic areas shaping the future of the CSO funding ecosystem, including:

• Financial sustainability of non-profit organizations amid constrained funding environments
• Local vs international funding streams: power, dependency, and sustainable balance
• Internal and external barriers to accessing funding beyond grant proposals
• Sub-granting and fiscal hosting as pathways for grassroots CSO inclusion
• Inclusive grantmaking and ensuring grassroots CSOs are not left behind

Together, these conversations aim to reshape how funding systems engage with civil society towards a more inclusive, transparent, and collaborative ecosystem in Botswana. Debswana Diamond Company, European Union in Botswana, FNB Botswana, Fondation Orange, Lesego Chombo, Lesego Chombo Foundation

The Grantor–Grantee Forum, embedded within the CSOs Mentorship and Capacity Building Program, brings together funders and funding recipients in all their diversity. The Forum convenes embassies, foundations, corporates, philanthropists, international development funding agencies, government departments, NGOs, CSOs, INGOs, and consultancies to engage on Botswana’s funding landscape for Non-Profit Making Organizations.

Working directly and on the ground with grassroots CSOs, community-based organizations, WE have witnessed firsthand that some of the most valuable resources for sustainability already exist within communities themselves. The challenge is often not the absence of resources, but the ability to identify, organize, and strategically leverage them for long-term impact.

Our approach to resource mobilization for grassroots Civil Society Organizations had always been grounded in the belief that communities and organizations already possess valuable resources that can be leveraged for sustainability and growth. Too often, resource mobilization is narrowly understood as fundraising from external donors.

While grant funding remains important and crucial and we capacitate CSOs on grant proposal writing, CSR, sustainable organizations are recognizing, value, and strategically utilize the resources that already exist within their communities, networks, and institutions.

Grassroots CSOs possess a wide range of assets, including community trust, volunteer networks, traditional knowledge, local leadership, physical infrastructure, relationships with local businesses, access to land, cultural heritage, and social capital. These resources are often overlooked despite their potential to support organizational development and program delivery.

Our facilitation of training and capacity-strengthening workshops for grassroots CSOs in all their diversity, I encourage participants to conduct asset mapping exercises through SWOT Analysis that help them identify existing resources within their organizations and communities. This process shifts the mindset from scarcity to opportunity, enabling organizations to recognize their strengths and explore innovative ways of generating value from available assets.

A key component of this approach is exploring shared-resource models and social enterprise development. Grassroots organizations can reduce operational costs through resource-sharing arrangements such as shared office space, equipment, transportation, technical expertise, and administrative services. Additionally, organizations can establish mission-aligned social enterprises that generate unrestricted income to support core operations, strengthen institutional sustainability, and reduce dependency on donor funding.

Through the "Tsee X'age," Engage for change, capacity building project in Ghanzi by Stepping Stones International and Koko Consulting LLC funded by European Union in Botswana, European Commission, Petra Pereyra, we had the opportunity to facilitate several RM workshops in Ghanzi as a Resource Mobilization and Grants consultant. As part of our ongoing Non Profit Making Organizations Mentorship and Capacity Building Program, On June we would welcome UNDP Botswana (United Nations Development Programme) Botswana as a contributing partner to the program, where they will facilitate a highly anticipated session on:

"Building Social Enterprises for Non-Profit Organizations: Pathways to Sustainability and Long-Term Impact."

This session comes at a critical stage of the program as enrolled participants transition from foundational organizational development knowledge into discussions around sustainability, resilience, and long-term organizational growth.

Across Botswana and Africa, many CSOs continue to depend heavily on grants and donor funding to sustain their work. While grants remain important, the changing funding landscape requires organizations to think differently about sustainability. The ability to diversify income streams, develop mission-aligned revenue models, and build social enterprises is increasingly becoming a strategic necessity rather than an option.

UNDP's expertise in inclusive economic development, innovation, sustainable livelihoods, and institutional strengthening will provide valuable insights into how non-profit organizations can position themselves as sustainable development actors, building social enterprises while remaining true to their missions and social impact objectives.

The session also builds momentum toward the Grantor–Grantee Forum 2026 taking place on 30 July 2026, where CSOs will engage directly with funding agencies in all their diversity including embassies, foundations, philanthropists, international NGOs, corporate partners, development agencies, government institutions, consultants, and other stakeholders across Botswana's funding ecosystem. Jhpiego Botswana, French Embassy in Botswana, Debswana Diamond Company, Choppies Botswana, Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Botswana, European Union in Botswana, Embassy of Japan in Botswana - 在ボツワナ日本国大使館, MVA Fund Botswana.

Together, we are creating spaces for learning, networking, collaboration, and honest conversations about the future of civil society sustainability and funding landscape.

On Saturday 11, Stanbic Bank Botswana Accelerate Incubator hosted session 7 of the Non Profit Making Organizations Mentorship and capacity building program on Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Frameworks for CSOs, facilitated by Lebo Odo Sekaname from Thusang BANA Centre.

The session unpacked the fundamentals of M&E as more than just a reporting requirement, but as a live strategic tool for learning, accountability, and adaptive management. Key lessons included how to design simple but effective M&E frameworks, define realistic indicators, track progress meaningfully, and use data for decision-making rather than compliance alone. For startup CSOs, this was a critical reminder that what gets measured gets managed, and what gets managed improves impact. Thanks to Lebo Odo Sekaname, Thusang BANA Centre for such an insightful training session.

Looking ahead, the program continues with upcoming sessions on Grant Proposal Writing, Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement, Communications and Visibility and Social Enterprise Development facilitated by UNDP Botswana, Supreme Global Solutions Consulting, French Embassy in Botswana, building from past training sessions facilitated by Youth Impact, Jhpiego Botswana, Cancer Association of Botswana.

These sessions will further equip enrolled CSOs leaders with practical tools to engage donors, influence policy, and build resilient, innovative organizations.

Ultimately, this CSOs Mentorship and Capacity Building Program, launched on 07 February, provides integrated and holistic training across the core components of CSO operations, while also culminating in a Grantor–Grantee Forum in July that brings together funders and funding recipients to strengthen collaboration, improve alignment of priorities, enhance accountability, and unlock more effective and sustainable financing for impactful community-driven development.

Hosted at Stanbic Bank Botswana Accelerate Incubator; The next session of the Non Profit Making Organizations Mentorship and Capacity Building Program at Supreme Global Solutions Consulting will focus entirely on "Monitoring & Evaluation for Civil Society Organizations", facilitated by Thusang BANA Centre, Lebo Odo Sekaname.

Why this session matters: Many emerging CSOs do important and impactful work, and there is a growing need to clearly capture, demonstrate, and communicate that impact in a structured and consistent way. As they grow and expand their work, strong systems for tracking results, learning from implementation, and communicating outcomes become essential for strengthening programs, building trust, and attracting sustainable diverse funding.

Participants will gain practical skills across key Monitoring & Evaluation building blocks. A strong Monitoring & Evaluation system strengthens the entire organization by improving strategic decision-making and governance, enhancing resource mobilization and the quality of funding grant proposals, and supporting stronger program design and implementation.

Looking forward to a practical, hands-on session that equips CSOs with tools to better measure, understand, and communicate their work.
