THE CSOs MENTORSHIP AND CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMME

The CSOs Mentorship and Capacity Building Programme is a structured programme designed to strengthen the organisational capacity, sustainability and effectiveness of emerging and grassroots Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

The programme provide practical learning, mentorship and exposure across key areas of organisational development, equipping CSO leaders with knowledge and tools to strengthen their organisations and improve their readiness to engage with partners, funders and other stakeholders.

Over the seven-month journey, the programme covers:

3-Management and Leadership
4-Resource Mobilisation
5-Grant Proposal Writing
6-Financial Management
7-Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning
8-Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement
9-Social Enterprise and Sustainable Revenue Models
10-Communications and Visibility
11-Research and Knowledge Management
12- Public Speaking
13- The Grantor- Grantee Forum

The programme also incorporates practical learning opportunities, mentorship, a Simulation Grant Facility, and engagement with stakeholders within the funding ecosystem.

The programme culminates in the Grantor–Grantee Forum, providing an opportunity for CSOs to connect with funding agencies, development partners, corporate institutions and other stakeholders while strengthening understanding of the relationship between civil society and the funding ecosystem.

Speaking during the completion ceremony of the 2026 cohort combined with The Grantor-Grantee Forum, our Founder and CEO Mr Barcos Mompati Mbakhwa narrated that “The reason behind establishing the Non Profit Making Organizations Mentorship and Capacity Building Programme was to respond to a fundamental gap within Botswana’s civil society ecosystem.

Many start-up and emerging Non Profit Making Organizations, in all their diversity, begin their journey with limited knowledge and organisational capacity to establish, govern and effectively operate their organizations. These challenges are often compounded by limited access to structured mentorship, training and capacity-building opportunities for Non-Profits, as well as scarce seed and start-up funding.

He made a comparison that this is different from the support environment available to emerging profit-making enterprises, where institutions such as CEDA, LEA and programmes such as YDF provide structured enterprise development support, mentorship, training and access to financing.

The programme was created to begin addressing that gap; equipping emerging CSOs with the practical knowledge, organisational foundations and skills required to build stronger and more sustainable Non Profit Making Organizations.

He added that the Programme was designed around a simple principle: CSOs capacity cannot be strengthened through one training topic in isolation. Grant proposal writing alone is not adequate. Financial management alone is not enough. Resource mobilisation alone is not adequate.

A stronger and sustainable CSO requires a holistic, well rounded set of interconnected capacities; from organisational identity, governance structures, management and leadership, to resource mobilisation, grant proposal writing, financial management, monitoring and evaluation, advocacy, communications and visibility, research, sustainable fundraising models, public speaking and understanding the funding ecosystem.

The programme also deliberately connect mentees with funders, development partners, corporates, experienced CSO practitioners, consultants and other stakeholders across the funding and civil society ecosystem as well as platforms to network with the entire ecosystem.

He concluded that Embassies, Corporates, Legal Practitioners, Philanthropists, International NGOs, International Funding Agencies, Foundations have surrounded and supported this mentees as they look forward to the next cohort.

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS AND FUNDING AGENCIES

Supreme Global Solutions Consulting, the official convener of the Annual Grantor–Grantee Forum, brought together more than 60 leaders from Non-Profit Making Organisations, funding agencies, development partners and other stakeholders for a day of dialogue, learning, experience-sharing and relationship building. The Forum was created as a platform to bring funders and Non-Profit Making Organisations in all their diversity into one space to better understand, navigate and strengthen the local funding landscape.

Through expert presentations, shared experiences, panel discussions and open dialogue, participants explored:
• The evolving funding landscape and what it means for local CSOs
• Funding priorities, expectations and grantmaking approaches
• Practical lessons in developing competitive grant proposals and securing funding
• Funding, partnership and collaboration opportunities
• Challenges affecting both funders and CSOs
• Experiences and perspectives from across the grantmaking ecosystem
• The importance of relationships, credibility, accountability and demonstrated impact in building sustainable partnerships
• Opportunities for CSOs to strengthen their positioning within the funding ecosystem

The Forum also served as a further learning and practical exposure opportunity for the 20 mentees of the 2026 CSOs Mentorship and Capacity Building Programme cohort, connecting their learning from the programme with real conversations involving funders, development partners and other actors within the sector.

At its core, the Grantor–Grantee Forum is about closing the distance between those seeking resources and those providing them creating space for honest conversations, shared learning, stronger relationships and a better understanding of what is needed on both sides.

A stronger civil society funding ecosystem requires more than funding opportunities. It requires dialogue, trust, transparency, preparedness, collaboration and relationships. That is the space the Grantor–Grantee Forum seeks to create.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 20 GRADUATING CSO LEADERS! 🎊🎊🎉🏆🏆

We are pleased to congratulate the 20 mentees who have successfully completed the 7-month CSOs Mentorship and Capacity Building Programme- 2026.

This programme was designed in recognition of a persistent reality within Non Profit Making Organizations: Grassroots and emerging CSOs are often closest to the communities they serve, understand local challenges deeply, and bring innovative, community-driven solutions to the table.

Yet, many operate within an environment where access to structured organisational development, capacity building, mentorship, funding opportunities, technical expertise, seed grants, strategic networks and institutional support remains limited. This can make it difficult for promising organisations to strengthen their systems, demonstrate their impact, compete effectively for grants/funding, build strategic partnerships and sustain their work over time.

The programme was therefore created to help bridge this gap by strengthening the structures, knowledge, confidence, networks and resources needed to turn that vision into sustainable impact.

Over seven months, through a combination of physical and virtual learning sessions, practical engagements, mentorship and exposure to sector experts, our mentees were incubated and explored:

Our 20 mentees had opportunities to learn directly from and engage with more than 20 stakeholders including CSOs, funding agencies, development partners, private-sector actors and sector experts through the programme’s launch masterclass, capacity-building sessions, mentorship engagements and the Grantor–Grantee Forum.

The Grantor–Grantee Forum further created a platform for our mentees to engage directly with funders, corporates and established CSOs, hear authentic experiences of accessing resources, understand the realities of grantmaking, explore new approaches to sustainability, and build relationships beyond the classroom.

A special appreciation to all the CSOs, funding agencies, development partners, private-sector organisations, facilitators, mentors and stakeholders who contributed their time, knowledge, platforms and resources to this journey. The programme may have been designed and convened by our Director-Mr Barcos Mompati Mbakhwa @ Supreme Global Solutions Consulting but the learning journey was strengthened by a much wider ecosystem.

Session 12 | Advocacy and stakeholder engagement for CSOs!

Session 12 of the CSOs Mentorship & Capacity Building Programme will focus on Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement facilitated by Botswana Centre for Public Integrity, equipping participating CSOs mentees with practical skills to advocate effectively for the issues they care about, influence decision-making, and build meaningful relationships with key stakeholders.

The CSOs Mentorship & Capacity Building Programme,, is a seven-month capacity-strengthening programme designed to strengthen the organisational systems, leadership and practical capabilities of participating civil society organisations.

The programme goes beyond once-off training. It provides a structured space for CSO leaders to learn, apply, receive mentorship, strengthen organisational systems, and build practical competencies across critical areas of organisational sustainability.

Throughout the programme, participants have been strengthening their capacity in areas including:
• Resource Mobilisation for CSOs
• Grant Proposal Development and Writing
• Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL)
• Financial Management and Accountability
• Governance, Leadership and Management
• Communications and Visibility etc

Session 12 now turns attention to advocacy; helping CSOs move from simply identifying the issues affecting their communities to developing clear advocacy objectives, influencing relevant decision-makers, building strategic alliances, and using evidence to drive change.

This is at the heart of what the programme seeks to achieve: stronger CSOs with the skills, systems, strategies and confidence to effectively deliver their missions and contribute to sustainable change.

International Youth Day 2026 | Different Contexts, Common Aspirations

This year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” captures something important about young people.

Our realities are not the same. A young person in Botswana may experience different challenges from a young person in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, India or Brazil. Even within the same country, young people experience opportunities and challenges differently depending on where they come from, their circumstances and the communities they live in.

But beneath these different contexts, there are common aspirations. Youth want opportunities, decent work, quality education, participate in decisions that affect us. We want to be treated with dignity and the opportunity to contribute to the development of our communities and countries.

For me Supreme Global Solutions Consulting
this theme resonates strongly with a point I have made in many of my presentations and speeches affirmed by Thobo Khathola today during his speech at Botswana National Youth Council- BNYC; young people are not leaders of tomorrow. We are leaders today. Young people are already leading in our communities, consulting, businesses, civil society, technology, activism, politics, education and many other spaces. We are not waiting for a future opportunity to contribute. We are contributing now, shaping conversations now and influencing change now.

The way we speak about young people therefore matters. When we constantly describe young people as “leaders of tomorrow,” we unintentionally place their leadership in the future when it is already happening in the present.

As the current holder of Best Youth Activist on Social Issues awarded by Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs BW and BNYC, I have seen the capacity of young people to organize, advocate, create solutions and influence change Lion Tutoring.

The challenge is not simply getting young people into spaces. It is what happens when we get there. This is where I believe we need to challenge symbolic engagement. Sometimes young people are invited to consultations, conferences, committees and dialogues because their presence demonstrates that young people have been included.

But inclusion should not simply mean being present. If young people are invited to speak, but their views do not influence the outcome, what exactly was the purpose of the engagement? If young people are consulted after the important decisions have already been made, how meaningful was the consultation?

If young people are repeatedly told that they are the leaders of tomorrow, while decisions about their present are being made without them, we need to question that approach. Youth participation must move beyond consultation to meaningful influence. Lesego Chombo.

Young people should not only be asked what they think. Young people should have opportunities to help shape the agenda, influence decisions, implement solutions and hold institutions accountable.

Different contexts. Common aspirations.
And perhaps one of those common aspirations should be the right to move from simply being engaged to having meaningful influence.
