What a great day on Saturday. Thanks to everyone who turned up to last weekends

We had an awesome group and great fun and two runners pushed right up to 12-hours of running! Such grit and spirit well done to everyone for coming and the next one will be even better!

Our goal in the Okavango Marathon Project is to find and support emerging long-distance trail runners from remote areas — giving them the coaching, resources and opportunity to compete locally and on the world stage representing their community and perhaps one day their country.

Events like this help us grow awareness and build the community so thank you.

If you’re interested in helping us grow ultratrail running in let us know!

Hey everyone!

Welcome to the Okavango Marathon Project - Backyard Ultra - Maun. Maun's first official Backyard Ultra event, hosted at Sitatunga Camp, Maun.

If you are in Maun or can make it to Maun on Saturday 18th July then come along.

Every hour, on the hour, runners complete a 6.7km loop. The last runner standing wins. There is no finish line.

*The format*

Runners compete individually, but teams are welcome — your combined yards count towards the Team Challenge.

Even if you want to come along, do one or two and soak up the atmosphere, it's a brilliant way to get into trail running and join the community.

And if running isn't your thing on the day, come and support the longer runners as they come round — watching people test themselves is half the fun!

The event is live on our Strava Club — find it, RSVP and your "yards" will automatically tag OMP on the day.

Okavango Brewing Company beer will be on site and Sitatunga Campsite Maun are putting on a breakfast/brunch special. The vibe will be great.

Entry is only P120, which goes directly towards finding runners across Botswana and supporting them to grow in the sport.

Meet One 🇧🇼

Gobonaone Modisane is a co-founder of the Okavango Marathon Project, and if you’ve run with us in Maun, chances are she’s the reason you found out about it. She’s the one finding new runners, pulling the community together, and helping plan the routes we run as a team.

She is an educator at heart and a few years ago she started the NqooSa Development Centre, helping children and youth build practical life skills through hands-on, interactive learning.

Trail running is how she reconnects with herself and with the land she grew up on, and that same energy spills into everything else she does. She brings the vibes, and OMP wouldn’t be what it is without her.

We’re lucky to have her and we can't wait to see you all out on the trails soon. Lots of cool trail get togethers coming soon!

On 18th July, we're hosting a in Maun at Sitatunga Camp — and if you haven't come across this format before, here's why it's unlike anything else in running.

Every hour, on the hour, you run a 6.7 km loop we've created. Then you do it again. And again. Each loop is a "yard". The last person standing wins. There's no set finish line, no predetermined distance — just you, the clock, and the question of whether you've got one more loop in you. It sounds simple. It is anything but.

What makes it brilliant is its great to bring your friends and family to come and support and enjoy the atmosphere of watching the runners come past. Every hour the runners return to the same start point, so you can cheer, heckle, hand out snacks, and watch the field slowly thin out as the hours tick by. It's genuinely gripping to watch.

You can enter as an individual or as a team of up to 3 — and see how many yards you can rack up, which opens it up to all fitness levels and makes for a great group challenge.

Entry is P120pp. Please click here https://omp.run/events/ to register and a big thanks to our supporters Chobe Impact and Salt Pans Ultra!

Happy Global Running Day 🌍

The perfect day to drop our new Adventure Issue, dedicated to the runs that take us somewhere new, whether that's across continents or simply down a path you've never explored before.

In the new issue, we head to the sands of the Sahara, the wetlands of Botswana and the peaks of the Alps. We follow runners chasing fastest known times close to home, tackling extraordinary endurance challenges and discovering that sometimes the greatest adventures aren't about where you go, but what you learn along the way.

Pick up the new issue, on stands now.
