On 16th January 2026, Fauna Conservation Trust (FCTN) led by it's Deputy Chairperson Ms Gracious Mogalakwe and Secretary Mr Gabofele Mokgwathi met with representatives of MMG Khoemacau led by the Executive Director in charge of Stakeholder Engagement, Sustainability and Legal Compliance Mr Boikobo Paya to discuss contents of an Inception report for the Maun Urban Regeneration Project as championed by FCTN and Nhabe Museum.

The Maun Urban Regeneration Project is a project intended to ignite transformation of Maun from mere Tourism Transit Port to Tourism Destination Area by integrating the Maun Education Park, Thamalakane River Front, Nhabe Museum and Maun Airport Enclave into a pedestrian friendly, informal business sector facilitative recreation area.

As part of its mission to contribute to poverty reduction, job creation and empower women and youth, MMG Khoemacau has funded the conceptualisation and development of the masterplanning which is expected to be complete by end of April 2026.

FCTN and Nhabe Museum will next embark on a local stakeholder engagement exercise to create buy-in and broker essential partnerships critical to project implementation.

On 8th September 2025, the Board of Trustees of the Fauna Conservation Trust of Ngamiland led by Principal Trustee and Chairman, Kgosi Kgolo II met with residents of Maun to Tawanaunveil the trust to it's beneficiaries for the very first time.

He reported that the trust had been registered with the master of the High Court as far back as 8th October 2022 and that the Board had clinched two victories in the form of:

1. Maun Education Park had been handed back to the tribe

2. Government, represented by Tawana Land Board, had conceded that Moremi Game Reserve rightly belongs to the tribe and in evidence of that, a benefit sharing agreement allocating 70% of concession lease payments be given to the tribe and the balance of 30% retained by TLB.

Kgosi Kgolo also shared that the trust constitution recognized a total of four Ngamiland regions from whence members of the trust shall be drawn. It is at the first AGM of the trust in about 6 months that a new elected board shall be established.

KGOSI TAWANA URGES OKMCT RESIDENTS TO COMPROMISE ON DISPUTE

Batawana Paramount Chief, Kgosi Tawana II Moremi , has called on members of the Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust (OKMCT) to put aside their differences and reach a compromise for the greater good of the community.

Speaking at a meeting in Maun recently, which was convened by North West District Commissioner Thabang Waloka to address ongoing disputes over the management of the trust, Kgosi Tawana emphasized that unity and cooperation were essential for the trust to effectively serve its purpose.

He urged both the “Concerned Group” and the current Board of Trustees to work towards common ground, stressing that unresolved divisions could undermine community benefits derived from the trust.

The Fauna Conservation Trust has submitted 4 project ideas to the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme and today, on deadline for submissions, we received a letter of acknowledgement for our submission. By this initiative, President Duma Boko has succeeded in creating an inspiring two-way social contract between his government and the governed. If carried through to it's logical conclusion, Batswana will not be mere spectators, but active participants, in the transformation of their economic reality.
