On the 19th of August, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) workshop in Jwaneng brought together LESOYOFA members alongside other national stakeholders to discuss opportunities and challenges in Fodder Production. With cattle numbers declining and small stock gaining importance, a national fodder strategy was seen as essential for strengthening food security.

Key Takeaways:
โ€ข Irrigated fodder crops ensure consistent feed supply
โ€ข Crop residues and byproducts reduce waste and support feed security
โ€ข Adoption of climate smart practices and drought tolerant species
โ€ข Addressing water scarcity, high input costs, and knowledge gaps
โ€ข Partnerships between government, private sector, farmers and associations
โ€ข Research and training institutions to build farmer capacity

๐ŸŒพ Fodder Production is a pillar for resilience, cutting imports, supporting small stock, and sustaining the national herd.

Stakeholders in attendance:
- Ministry of Lands and Agriculture
- Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board - BAMB
- Botswana University of Agriculture & Natural Resources
- Letlhabile Southern Young Farmers Association
- Southern District Beef Farmers Association
- Debswana Diamond Company
- SeedCo
- CEDA
