UNITED AGAINST GBV COALITION CONDEMNS THREATS AGAINST GAONE MOGAE AND CALLS FOR URGENT PROTECTIVE ACTION

The United Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Coalition expresses grave concern over the alarming reports made by Ms. Gaone Mogae, who has publicly alleged that her life is under threat and that she continues to face persistent harassment and intimidation.

At a time when Botswana is grappling with a devastating rise in Gender-Based Violence, particularly against women and children, this case represents yet another urgent call for decisive intervention and victim-centered protection mechanisms.

Ms. Mogae has stated that she has repeatedly reported the matter to the police and submitted supporting evidence. The recent decision to grant bail to the accused has intensified public anxiety and reignited national debate around whether our bail system sufficiently prioritizes the safety of victims in GBV-related cases.

Our Position

As the United Against GBV Coalition, we affirm the following:

1. Victim safety must be the highest priority in all GBV-related investigations and judicial proceedings.
2. Where credible threats are reported, immediate protective measures must be activated to prevent potential harm.
3. The justice system must balance the rights of the accused with the fundamental right to life and safety of victims.
4. There is an urgent need to review bail conditions in GBV cases to ensure that they do not expose complainants to further risk.

A National Crisis
Botswana continues to witness tragic deaths linked to GBV. Survivors who find the courage to speak out must be met with swift protection, not prolonged fear. When victims publicly state they fear for their lives, it signals a systemic gap that demands urgent attention.

Our Call to Action
We call upon:

* Law enforcement authorities to conduct an immediate risk assessment and ensure Ms. Mogae’s safety.
* The judiciary to apply stringent bail conditions in GBV-related cases where threats are alleged.
* Government to accelerate reforms that strengthen survivor protection frameworks.
* Communities to remain vigilant and supportive of individuals who report violence and threats.

The United Against GBV Coalition stands in solidarity with all survivors of violence. We reaffirm our commitment to advocating for policies and systems that turn awareness into action and ensure that no individual lives in fear after seeking help.

GBV is not a private matter — it is a national emergency.

🧡 16 Days of Activism Against GBV Message
🎯 Theme: “Unite! To End Digital Violence Against Women and Girls”

As the world marks the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we raise our voices to confront a growing threat — digital violence targeting women and girls. Online spaces should be safe, empowering, and inclusive. Yet every day, many face harassment, cyberbullying, exploitation, image-based abuse, and manipulation fueled by technology.

The United Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign joins the global movement, calling on every individual, institution, and platform to Unite! To End Digital Violence Against Women and Girls.

This means:

📌PROTECTING women and girls online from abuse and exploitation
📌PROMOTING cyber safety, digital literacy, and responsible use of technology
📌HOLDING offenders accountable without excuses
📌SUPPORTING survivors through non-judgmental, trauma-informed care
📌 EMPOWERING girls to take up space boldly in digital environments

🧡Digital violence is real — it harms, humiliates, and limits opportunities.
If it happens online, it is still violence.

📌If we allow it, we are part of the problem.
📌If we unite, we become the solution.

🧡 Let’s turn awareness into action — both online and offline.
🧡 United Against GBV — A safer nation starts with us.
🧡 Ke nako ya go ikopanya re fedise kgokgontsho ya mo maranyaneng!

💙 MOVEMBER IS HERE 💙
This month, as the gents grow their moustaches, lets us all raise our voices for men’s health both the physical and mental. 🧔🏾

For too long, society has told men to “man up” and stay silent. But silence saves no one. It’s time to break the stereotypes, speak openly about mental health, and encourage every man to seek help, check in, and get checked. 💪🏾

Because strong men ask for help.
Because real men feel.
Because healthy men build stronger communities.

Let’s cherish their health, their hearts, and their voices. 💙

UNITED AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE CAMPAIGN OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED ✨

On the 13th of August 2025, the Mogoditshane Main Kgotla became a place of hope, unity, and action as the community stood together to declare: Enough is enough!

💜 Under the theme "Turning Awareness into Action", the United Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign was launched — a year-long, community-driven movement led by 12 dedicated partner organizations and individuals committed to ending the pain, fear, and silence caused by GBV.

The Master of Ceremonies, Otshepeng Tshupo, outlined the day’s objectives, making it clear to all present that the fight against GBV cannot wait. Botswana Prisons Services also pledged their support to the coalition, offering to partner in outreach initiatives and community empowerment efforts.

In a heartfelt community session, Mogoditshane residents shared their voices, expressing gratitude for the campaign and affirming that it comes at exactly the right time to heal families, protect the vulnerable, and inspire change.

The event was graced by distinguished guests including:
👑 Kgosi Dihutso – Mogoditshane
🏛 District Commissioner’s Office
💼 Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport & Culture (Gender Affairs Department)
📜 Tribal Secretary
🚔 Botswana Prisons Services Representatives
🤝 Social Workers
🎺 St John Apostolic Faith Mission Brass Band – whose uplifting music filled the air with hope
🎨 Lebanna Rasoul – celebrated artist, author, and educator

🎤 Highlights from the speeches:

🔊Kgosi Dihutso emphasized the role of traditional leadership in fighting GBV, urging the community to unite, protect the vulnerable, and revive respect and humanity in homes.

🔊Ronald Chuma (Chairperson, United Against GBV Campaign) shared the vision of turning awareness into practical, community-driven action, outlining key activities and the coalition’s commitment to a GBV-free Botswana.

🔊Gagoope Modimoosi (Ministry of Youth, Gender Affairs Representative,) in her keynote address, appreciated the coalition’s teamwork, urged open discussion on cultural norms, and reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for the campaign.

The coalition may be 12 organizations strong today, but the doors are wide open for more partners to join this fight. Community groups, faith-based organizations, businesses, and individuals are encouraged to come on board — because together, our impact will be greater and our voices louder.

Together, we commit to breaking the silence, ending violence, and transforming awareness into concrete action. 💪

📍 Mogoditshane is just the beginning. At the end of the year, the campaign will move to a new area, continuing the fight against GBV nationwide.
