FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A POSITIVE STEP BY THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND WELNESS: Includes Health Information Management Professionals in Monitoring and Evaluation Recruitment

The Botswana Health Information Management Association would like to commend the Ministry of Health for revising the job requirements for the Monitoring and Evaluation position to include Health Information Management (HIM) as one of the main requirements. This development follows the association recent press release wherein the exclusion of Health Information Management was made. The association emphasised the crucial role that HIM professionals play in monitoring and evaluation within the Ministry of Health.

We appreciate the Ministry's consideration and willingness to recognize the value of HIM professionals in monitoring and evaluation roles. The inclusion of HIM qualifications in the recently advertised job requirements is a significant step towards promoting diversity and inclusivity in the healthcare sector.

We hope that this development will set a precedent for future recruitments and promote a more inclusive and equitable work environment.

Over and above all, the association extensively encourage the HIM professionals to apply for the post even though it requires an unimaginably 10yrs of experience. We know your potential and the depth of monitoring and evaluation knowledge that you have acquired through serving in many areas and different non governmental organisations and the Ministry itself.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Disappointment Over Exclusion of Health Information Management Professionals in Monitoring and Evaluation

The Botswana Health Information Management Association is dismayed by the Ministry of Health's recent advertisement for a Monitoring and Evaluation position dated 20 October 2025. The job posting specifies requirements in Statistics, Sociology,Economics,Population Studies and related fields, noticeably and blatantly omitting the Health Information Management qualification.

This exclusion is particularly concerning ,given the crucial role that HIM professionals have played in monitoring and evaluation ,both within the Ministry of Health and across all DHMTs. As surveillance officers, they have demonstrated their capabilities in collecting, analysing, and interpreting Health data, informing policy decisions and driving health care improvements.

This omission seems to be a clear case of professional marginalisation and discrimination against HIM professionals, who have been integral to the Ministry 's monitoring and evaluation efforts. For years, HIM professionals have served as M&Es , collecting, analysing and interpreting Health data and informing policy decisions.

Some have worked for more than 3 years on a contract basis, while some have worked on a temporary basis; and the Ministry could not absorb them on a permanent basis, thanks to the policies and procedures of the DPSM. These are people on the ground, and as such, their profession should be among those outstanding as requirements, not as "related fields".

We urge the Ministry of Health to reconsider its approach to recruitment and recognise the value that HIM professionals can bring to the table. By embracing diversity in qualifications and expertise, the Ministry can foster a more inclusive and effective healthcare system.

And lastly,we urge the HIM professionals to apply in large numbers and if given the chance, do their very best as they have always been doing.
