Botswana Society for the Deaf Botswana Society for the Deaf is a non profit making, non governmental and charitable organization Mr. F. G. Mogae is the Patron.

The organisation comprises of full time office staff that manage the office and activities for the Deaf in Botswana on a daily basis (BSD operating hours are from 8:00AM-5:00PM Monday to Friday).The Centrers are managed by the community through ten board of governors while His Excellency, former The President of Botswana. The organisation owns and governs two Centres, Ramotswa and Francistown Centre for Deaf Education. These Centres provide pre-primary and primary school education for deaf learners.

Botswana Society for the Deaf (BSD) Community Mobilizers continue to engage Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), families, schools, and communities in Sesung Village to promote disability inclusion, human rights, accessibility, and awareness of the PWD Act 2024. They also raise awareness on HIV and NCD prevention while linking individuals to essential health services, referrals, and support.

📸 BSD PARTICIPATES IN DATA PROTECTION ACT SENSITISATION SESSION 🔐

🗓️ Date: 7 October 2026
📍 Venue: Staywell Hotel, Mogoditshane

The Botswana Society for the Deaf (BSD) participated in a Data Protection Act Sensitisation Session hosted by the Information and Data Protection Commission (IDPC) in collaboration with the Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD).

The workshop aimed to empower organisations working with persons with disabilities to better understand and effectively apply the Data Protection Act in their operations.

💡 Key discussion areas included:
🔹 Rights and responsibilities under the Data Protection Act
🔹 Reasonable accommodation and procedural support for persons with disabilities within the justice system
🔹 Ethical data handling and safeguarding personal information
🔹 Privacy protection and inclusive practices in service delivery

🤝 Through this engagement, BSD continues to strengthen its commitment to protecting personal information, upholding the rights of Deaf people, and promoting safe, accessible and inclusive practices across all its programmes and services.

👏 BSD extends its appreciation to the IDPC and BCD for facilitating this important initiative to advance data protection awareness and disability inclusion.

🔐 Protecting personal information is everyone’s responsibility. Inclusion must also mean privacy, dignity and respect for all!

🌍🤟 WHAT DOES AN INCLUSIVE DISASTER RESPONSE LOOK LIKE?

Today’s discussions at the “Inclusivity Crisis: Evaluating Botswana’s Legal Preparedness for Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction” engagement, hosted by the Office of the Ombudsman Botswana, brought an important issue to the table:

🚨 When disaster strikes, can everyone receive the warning, understand the information and access help?

For the Deaf community, inclusion means more than having a disaster plan. It means:

🤟 Early warnings in Sign Language and accessible formats
📱 Emergency information through accessible communication channels
🚪 Inclusive evacuation procedures
🚑 Emergency services that can communicate with Deaf people
🤝 Persons with disabilities involved in planning and decision-making

🚨 SESSION 2: EARLY WARNING, COMMUNICATION, EVACUATION & EMERGENCY RESPONSE 🚨

🔔 Early Warning: Deaf people must receive timely alerts through accessible channels such as SMS, visual alerts, social media and sign language.

📢 Communication: Emergency information must be clear, timely and available in accessible formats, including Botswana Sign Language (BSL).

🚪 Evacuation: Emergency and evacuation plans must consider the needs of Deaf people, including accessible routes, shelters and assembly points.

🆘 Emergency Response: Police, fire services, health workers and disaster-response teams need the knowledge and tools to communicate effectively with Deaf people during emergencies.

No one should be left behind when disaster strikes. Inclusion must be part of every stage of disaster risk reduction—from preparedness to response and recovery.

🤟 Deaf people must be included in planning, decision-making and emergency response.

The Botswana Society for the Deaf (BSD) is attending the “Inclusivity Crisis: Evaluating Botswana’s Legal Preparedness for Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction” engagement, hosted by the Ombudsman-Botswana

The engagement provides an important platform to discuss how Botswana’s legal and policy frameworks can better address the needs and rights of persons with disabilities during disasters and emergencies.

🤟 For the Deaf community, accessible communication, timely information, early warnings and inclusive emergency response systems are essential to ensuring that no one is left behind.

BSD remains committed to advocating for the rights, inclusion and meaningful participation of Deaf people in all areas of society, including disaster risk reduction.

The Botswana Society for the Deaf (BSD) brought together Deaf individuals, advocates, and partners for an impactful workshop focused on empowerment, inclusion and workplace readiness. 💙💛

🔹 Human Rights – BSD’s Mr Kafesu highlighted the importance of advocacy, equality and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities in employment.

🔹 Financial Literacy – FNBB equipped participants with knowledge on budgeting, responsible use of financial services and relevant financial products.

🔹 Mental Health & Emotional Intelligence – Participants explored strategies for managing stress, building positive relationships and working effectively in teams.

🔹 Industrial Relations – BOSETU shared valuable information on labour rights and promoting inclusive workplace practices.

🔹 Professionalism & Ethics – Participants were encouraged to uphold ethical conduct, professionalism and continuous career development.

🔹 Deaf Experiences – Powerful personal stories of resilience, determination and inclusion inspired participants and highlighted the strength of the Deaf community. 🙌🏽

🙏 The workshop concluded with heartfelt appreciation and a closing prayer, marking another important step towards empowering Deaf people with the knowledge, confidence and skills needed to participate fully in the workplace and society.
