Come and join us as we walk to urge our communities to come together to build a dementia-friendly society—one that values inclusion, respect, and support for all people living with dementia.

We are taking dementia awareness to the people. The past weekend we were in Serowe and teamed up with Serowe North constituency to organise a Memory Walk.

Our core mandate is to educate the public about dementia, reduce stigma, and promote understanding and support for those affected. We can only achieve this through public health campaigns and community engagement. We welcome anyone affected by dementia directly or indirectly to share personal stories.

Who are you?

One of the most tragic events in the lives of children is when one or both of their parents become incapable of remembering who they are. This is usually the result of severe Dementia. As dementia progresses, some people stop to recognizing people they know – even close friends and relatives. This can be upsetting for both the person with dementia and for the people who are no longer recognized.

Lack of recognition is common in people living with Alzheimer’s (another type of dementia). The most common reason for this is known as “face blindness”, where the part of the brain that is responsible for recognizing faces is damaged.

People with dementia also “travel back in time” reliving memories from when they were younger. When this happens, they might expect grown-up children to be small again, or think their parents are still alive, or believe they are still working, or in a relationship with a previous partner or spouse.

Key Differences Between Alzheimer's and Normal Aging

Unlike normal aging's occasional "senior moments," Alzheimer's causes systematic changes that worsen over time. Picture the difference between occasionally misplacing your keys (normal aging) versus putting keys in the refrigerator and not remembering how they got there (potential Alzheimer's indicator).

Memory and Learning

Normal Aging:

- Occasionally forgetting names or appointments but remembering later
- Being able to follow written/spoken directions
- Learning new things with practice

Alzheimer's:

- Forgetting recently learned information
- Repeating questions frequently
- Difficulty following familiar recipes or directions
- Increased reliance on memory aids
