GUARDIANS OF THE FUTURE LAUNCH 💚
Green Generation Botswana Initiative (GGBI) attended the launch of Guardians of the Future, a community-led movement focused on strengthening collective climate and environmental action from the ground up. The initiative brings together individuals, communities, schools, civic organisations and other local actors to take practical responsibility for the environments they live in and care about.
Guardians of the Future works through Guardian Circles—small local teams that identify and respond to environmental challenges in their communities.
These challenges can include unmanaged waste, loss of vegetation, water stewardship, biodiversity restoration, urban heat, composting and local food systems. The emphasis is on practical, community-led action that creates visible environmental impact.
The launch brought together representatives from the Department of Forestry, teachers and learners from different schools, including Benthema and Lesedi Primary Schools. As part of the engagement, participants were introduced to practical fruit-tree planting, with particular emphasis on grafted fruit trees.
Grafting involves joining a selected scion, which is the desired fruit-producing variety, to a suitable rootstock, which provides the established root system. This technique allows desirable characteristics from different plants to be combined and can contribute to more consistent fruit production and, depending on the species and growing conditions, earlier fruiting than some seed-grown trees.
Above all, Guardians of the Future also shared its intention to support environmental action through the donation of trees, creating opportunities for schools and communities to participate directly in greening and conservation efforts. This complements the initiative's broader approach of encouraging people to take practical responsibility for the spaces they occupy and care about.
For GGBI, the engagement was an opportunity to learn, connect with environmental stakeholders and explore how practical initiatives can empower young people and communities to become active guardians of the environments they depend on.
