GAYO Botswana Joins Gamodubu Civil Society to Celebrate World Environment Day

On Friday, 5th June 2026, GAYO Botswana partnered with Gamodubu Civil Society and other stakeholders to commemorate World Environment Day in Gamodubu Village under the theme "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future."

The day brought together community members, learners, local leadership, and environmental stakeholders for practical climate action at Gamodubu Primary School. Zero Waste education sessions equipped attendees with knowledge on waste segregation, recycling, composting, sustainable consumption, and the purpose of brand auditing as a tool for understanding pollution trends.

A highlight of the event was the Zero Waste Guardians Enterprise Showcase, where graduates displayed products made from recyclable and recovered materials, demonstrating that waste can become a resource.

Gamodubu Village continues to face significant environmental challenges due to its proximity to Botswana's largest regional landfill. This commemoration showed that with practical skills and collective action, communities can turn waste into economic and environmental opportunities.

GAYO Botswana Represented at Commonwealth Youth Multilateral Negotiations Training in London

The Youth Climate Council Botswana Coordinator is currently participating in the Commonwealth Youth Multilateral Negotiations Training at Marlborough House, Pall Mall, Commonwealth Headquarters in London.

The training, running from 3rd June 2026, brings together 48 participants including 36 Commonwealth youth representatives. It is supported by the Australian Deputy High Commission and the Türkiye High Commission in their capacity as COP31 Presidency and co-hosts.

Our Coordinator was nominated by the UNCCD Focal Point and Director of Forestry and Range Resources, Baitshepi Edith Babusi-Hill, building on a year of in-country preparation with the Department of Meteorological Services (UNFCCC Focal Point), the Multilateral Agreement Team, and legal experts in Botswana.

Key sessions have included:

· Opening remarks by Ms Elisabeth Bowes PSM (Australian Deputy High Commissioner) and Mr Osman Koray Ertaş (Türkiye High Commissioner)
· Online remarks by Sally Higgins (COP Presidency Youth Climate Champion, COP31) and Gianluca Crispi (UN Climate Change Legal Officer)
· Session 1: Climate, Biodiversity, and Land Science Fundamentals – covering the Rio Conventions (UNFCCC, CBD, UNCCD), biodiversity facets, land degradation neutrality, and the Rio Trio Initiative launched at UNCCD COP16 (2024)

Participants are mastering the mechanics of global environmental governance, including decoding bracketed text in resolutions, strategic agenda analysis, and drafting positions for negotiations.

The insights gained will be shared across the local YCC Botswana and YCCGAnetworks through specialized skills-transfer calls to empower the next generation of Batswana negotiators.

GAYO Botswana Participates in World Environment Day Commemoration Hosted by Ministry of Environment and Tourism,

GAYO Botswana was honoured to join the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, through the Department of Environmental Protection, alongside stakeholders, community leaders, and residents for the World Environment Day Commemoration held at Urban Kgotla on 4th June 2026. The event was held under the global theme "Climate Action" and local theme "Resilient Communities, Sustainable Future."

The programme included a litter-picking exercise led by Deputy Mayor, Her Worship Mankie Sekete, and a tree planting session led by the Department of Forestry and Range Resources.

The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Hon. Ramaotwana Nelson Ramaotwana, who was in attendance, commended environmental education initiatives undertaken for children, acknowledging that they have played a vital role in raising awareness and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among the country's youth. He further recognised the stewardship of organisations like GAYO Botswana in empowering young people and building a climate-smart economy that promotes innovation, green jobs, and sustainable livelihoods.

Urban Court President, Kgosi Oageng Mosole, delivered welcome remarks highlighting the critical role of environmental conservation in sustainable development and quality of life for present and future generations.

GAYO Botswana remains committed to empowering young people as leaders in climate action and environmental stewardship. We thank the Ministry of Environment and Tourism for the invitation and for acknowledging the role of youth in building a resilient, sustainable Botswana.
