Growing Together Through Knowledge and Innovation

The Tutume District Show continues to demonstrate the power of bringing generations together to learn, share, and inspire one another.

As part of the Organising Committee, Youth Unlimited Network is proud to support a platform that fosters intergenerational knowledge exchange, where experienced farmers share practical wisdom with the next generation while young people contribute fresh ideas, innovation, and enthusiasm. This exchange is essential for building a resilient and sustainable agricultural sector.

One of the highlights has been the participation of Farmer Field Schools (FFSs), whose members proudly showcased high-quality seeds, crops, and farm produce. Their exhibits reflect the impact of continuous learning, climate-smart agricultural practices, and community-driven innovation. More importantly, they demonstrate that when farmers learn together, they grow together. It is now crucial to establish a community seed bank so that indigenous climate resilient seeds are not lost.

The Tutume District Show is more than an exhibition—it is a celebration of knowledge, collaboration, and community. By creating opportunities for young farmers to learn from seasoned producers and for communities to share their experiences, we are investing in the future of agriculture and rural development.

When communities come together to heal their land, it’s equally an amazing seed to watch grow!

After a whole season, the Farmer Field School we facilitated in Tutume has seen a better harvest. By intercropping lablab with millet, farmers improved soil health while also providing nutritious feed for their livestock.

They learned how to bale lablab into stacks of cubes for storage, practiced soil sampling techniques to understand their land better, and discovered how to slow running water on their fields using the rock and mesh gabion technique. They also learned how a tractor operates when ploughing so that they can facilitate the process better.

It’s been a wonderful journey — watching knowledge take root, resilience grow, and communities thrive together. 🌾💚

YUN has officially got the green light to mobilize communities in Tutume towards making sure vulnerable kids at Tutume central primary school are warm and fed this winter. Please contact us to donate pre-loved warm clothes, shoes, toiletries and non perishable food items.

Climate change affects us all — and its impact is felt most by children who are already vulnerable. Together, we can make sure no child faces the cold or hunger. All children are the future.

Last week we attended the NGO mixer, a networking session set up by Magnolia Foundry in Block 8 industrial Gaborone.

YUN joined a diverse group of community leaders, nonprofit representatives, and social entrepreneurs who gathered to exchange ideas and explore collaborative opportunities. The event fostered lively discussions around sustainable development, local impact projects, and creative partnerships, with Magnolia’s vibrant space providing an atmosphere that encouraged networking and cross-sector dialogue.

Our participation highlighted the mixer’s role as a bridge between grassroots initiatives and broader organizational strategies, making it a meaningful platform for building connections and strengthening community-driven efforts. We were very honored to have been invited to attend.

We are excited to share our ongoing tree planting initiative in Tutume, in collaboration with the local primary school. Together with learners, teachers, and community members, we are nurturing a greener future: one seedling at a time!!!

This campaign is rooted in the belief that true change begins at the grassroots. By involving our children and community directly, we ensure that environmental stewardship becomes part of our daily lives and values.

Every tree planted today is not only a promise of shade, clean air, and sustainability for tomorrow. it is also a direct expression of our mandate at Youth Unlimited Network: driving youth-centered transformation through climate action, community-led adaptation, and intergenerational knowledge sharing.

We’re excited to share that the Farmer Field School (FFS) in Tutume is taking a big step forward in both livelihood improvement and land restoration.

It is important to note that the Department of Forestry supplies seedlings that are:
- 75% forest/wild species (for reforestation and ecological balance)
- 25% commercial species (fruit trees & other income-generating trees)

Through FFS participation, our community will focus on selling the commercial seedlings. This means:
- Boosting household incomes
- Supporting land restoration efforts
- Strengthening community collaboration

All seedlings will be nurtured at the local community woodlot/plantation, ensuring sustainability and shared responsibility.

What makes this initiative even more special is that our youth joined with their families, encouraging intergenerational knowledge-sharing and community stewardship towards restoring the land. Together, we are planting not just trees, but values of care, responsibility, and hope for future generations.

Youth Voices in Action – EMPOWER+ Focus Group Discussion

Yesterday we took part in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) under the EMPOWER+ Erasmus+ Capacity Building Project, which is working to establish Rural Youth Parliaments in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The session brought young stakeholders together to share ideas on how rural youth can:
- Shape decision-making in their communities
- Influence youth-friendly policies
- Lead development initiatives that matter to them

The FGD was an important step towards building strong, inclusive platforms where youth voices are heard and acted upon.

We are excited to continue this journey with Joint Minds Consult and ensure that young people, especially from rural areas are at the center of governance and community development.

Green value chains in tutume

Today, YUN visited local sites where young people are harnessing the power of bee keeping to restore biodiversity and strengthen green value chains.

Bees are more than honey producers—they are nature’s frontline workers in pollination, climate resilience, and land restoration. By investing in sustainable practices like bee keeping, our youth are not only creating livelihoods but also healing the land, protecting ecosystems and building community resilience against climate change.

This initiative shows how green value chains can transform challenges into opportunities—linking environmental stewardship with economic empowerment. Together, we are proving that climate action starts at the grassroots, and that restoring our land means restoring hope for future generations. 💪
