World Carfree Day Commemoration ride

What a ride!! I loved it to bits.

Took 25 minutes from 3 chiefs monument to Grand Palm to the staring point and the return leg from Grand Palm to 3 chiefs, took 20 minutes, without breaking a sweat.

As can be seen from the clips, traffic was barely moving and yet we were just flowing.

Talk about heat and sweat, that is a perception that discourages cycling, morning (6am-8am) and afternoon (4.30pm-6.30pm) bike commute to and from work takes place when when the sun is down when it is the most coolest.

“World Carfree Day, on September 22nd, reminds us to rethink transport—reducing car use, easing traffic, and promoting healthier, eco-friendly options like cycling and walking.

In Gaborone, we’re marking the day with a free 4.3 km bike ride from Grand Palm to the Three Chiefs Monument, starting at 7 am. Everyone is welcome—families, groups, and individuals.

It’s fun, healthy, and symbolic of what a cleaner, safer city could look like. For details, call or WhatsApp 76674726.”

People tell me always to:

- Wear a helmet to protect my self or my head and
- Wear bright colored cloths to be seen.

But as long as we have drivers like this one that is either asleep behind the wheel or is drunk or distracted, then none of the suggested counter-measures are effective.

What believe can help make our roads safe for all is for every driver to attend the Professional Driver Training Program, the DEFENSIVE DRIVING MASTERCLASS from Defensive Driving Institute to become a Defensive Driver.

Big, black, bling, blocking out the sun and your view of the road. Giant utes: you can’t help but notice them, and that's the idea, of course.

Took the opportunity to participate in the inaugural TKC ride from Lobatse to Kanye and had a truly great outing.

I was however very disappointed that despite a great send off message from the PS before the Botswana team left for SA, wherein he talked at length about non-motorised transport as being a very important aspect of transport in line with the National Multi-modal Transport Plan that is in place.

It turns out that the focus is more on cycling as a sport and not really as transport and this is so entrenched and disappointing that despite efforts to have a ward with the media they ignored my advances in trying to give our perspective of cycling as transport.

I was even grilled by the sports guys who also confused the event as a race about the need for a helmet, who wanted me to stop riding but I challenged them to take action against me so that at list i can get n opportunity top educate them about cycling other than as a sport.
