While we sometimes complain about the deteriorating quality of education and the waywardness of some of our youth, it is heartening to note that there are some incredibly talented youths out there. This thought came to me as I was attending the 3rd Graduation Ceremony of the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law on 8th October 2024 and listening to the speech given by Ms. Lekzang Pakila Lhaki (Lekzang Pakila Lhaki), the recipient of the prestigious Mirror of Wisdom Award for 2024.
Lekzang's acceptance speech embodied maturity, wisdom and knowledge far beyond her age. And it was delivered in an equally befitting tone with a deep sense of humility and gratitude. I don't know Lekzang or her family personally, but she is definitely one of the youths who inspire hope and confidence for Bhutan's future since the future of the country really lie in the hands of our youth.
Among other things, she said, โThis recognition is not just a reflection of my individual efforts but of the incredible support I have received along the way. JSW Law has been more than just a schoolโit has been a sanctuary for my dreams, a crucible for my growth, and a community that has embraced me wholeheartedly. The knowledge and skills I have gained here are invaluable, but more importantly, this institution has instilled in me a profound sense of purposeโa commitment to serve others and uphold justice. As we move forward, my peers and I carry the heart and spirit of JSW, guided by the values of justice, service, and wisdom."
Our youths today are growing up in an environment that is totally different from our times. They have access to the world's information and knowledge at the click of a button. They can listen to the world's best professors and thinkers on Youtube or other platforms at any time they want. They can look up answers to any difficult questions in any subjects on the Internet at any time they like without having to wait for the teacher to explain. And now, AI tools promise much more.
But at the same time, our youths today are subject to much more pressure and expectations. Time now moves much faster as the pace of change has hastened. Everybody is busier. With all the good things that technology has brought about, it has equally brought about a lot of negative distractions which are hard to resist.
So the key really is making the right choice of using technology to enhance one's knowledge and skills. And the youths that do this have the opportunity to really excel. They can, even while in high school, be more knowledgeable than college graduates or their teachers in some aspects. For this, they would also need the right guidance and support from teachers and parents, and an environment conducive to learning and growth, both at home and school. I feel that JSW Law, Bhutanโs first and only law school, provides such an environment where every student is cared for and nurtured by not only the faculty members and the Dean, but by HRH Ashi Sonam Dechan Wangchuk, as the President of the College, with her personal care, attention and warmth. The lucky students of JSW Law, chosen through a merit-based selection system, come from various societal backgrounds.
