Bhutan Film Society is deeply honored to pay our heartfelt tribute to the late Pema Tseden on his death anniversary. Marking this moment through the privilege of revisiting one of his most profound works, Old Dog (2011). It has been both a humbling and deeply moving experience for all of us.
Over the past two weeks, we have had the rare opportunity to immerse ourselves in his cinematic world, made possible through the generous support and guidance of Norbu Tshering of Nortse Production. Beginning with The Search (2009) and culminating in Old Dog (2011), this journey has allowed us to look beyond the surface of his films and glimpse the depth of his convictions as a filmmaker. Through his films we feel his need for resistance done in such a subtle way and his unwavering commitment to portraying the realities of Tibetan life with honesty and dignity.
It is an immeasurable loss for our community, and for the broader cinematic world, to have lost a filmmaker of his caliber especially one whose voice emerged so powerfully from our own region. Yet, even in his absence, his presence endures. His films remain with us as teachers, urging us to listen more closely, to observe more patiently and to tell our own stories with truth and compassion.
Bhutan Film Society will continue to screen the rest of late Pema Tseden's films and its open to all who are interested. On behalf of BFS I would like to once again thank Mr. Norbu Thsering and I would also like to thank Thinley Wangchuk for connecting us with Mr. Norbu la. This is a wonderful example how films tend to unite us and build on the community.

Over the past year, Bhutan Film Society's Weekly Screening has had the privilege of showcasing a remarkable selection of films that reflect the depth, diversity, and poetic strength of independent cinema from the region.

Our screenings featured Second Chance (2024) by Subhadra Mahajan, Rapture (2023) by Dominic Sangma, Stone Turtle (2022) by Woo Ming Jin, Highway (2012) and White Sun (2016) by Rauniyar. Each of these films brought with it a distinct voice and perspective, exploring themes of identity, memory, belonging, and the quiet complexities of everyday life.

What made these screenings especially meaningful were the intimate Q&A sessions with the filmmakers. These conversations allowed audiences to engage directly with the creative minds behind the films, offering insight into their processes, challenges, and inspirations. It created a rare space for dialogue where cinema was not only watched, but deeply discussed and felt.

The experience has been both enriching and inspiring for our growing community. It reminded us of the power of storytelling and the importance of creating spaces where such stories can be shared, questioned, and celebrated together.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the filmmakers for their generosity and to our members and audience for being part of these special evenings. We look forward to continuing this journey of cinema, conversation, and community.

Bhutan Film Society would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Director Subhadra Mahajan for sharing such an intimate and moving story with us. Second Chance (2024) gently draws us into the inner world of a young woman navigating a deeply personal and difficult choice, while quietly reminding us that even in uncertainty, there is always the possibility of light.

What stayed with us was the film’s delicate weaving of human emotion with the natural world the mountains, the river, the snow, the stillness and the cold all becoming part of her journey toward self-discovery. We love how you truthfully stuck to the wisdom of the mountains and the culture of the nomadic people from the mountains starting from their colloquialism to their philosophy of how they view the world without making it seem exotic or documentaryesque. And ofcourse we absolutly love the sweater choices of the main character.

Thank you for sharing this film with us and we hope to see you in person real soon in the Bhutan.

We would also like to extend of gratitude to Dechen Roder for connecting us with the filmmaker.
