A Parents Perspective
With the excitement and expectation of a new baby, the thought that something could go wrong is the last thing on any parents mind.
Upon hearing that something was wrong with our child, the first reaction is denial. Then you desperately seek another opinion. When hearing the second opinion, anger sets in. Who are you angry with? First its yourself, then God, then everyone around you. The thought of abandoned, aborted or unwanted children comes to mind.
You ask God the questions "Why?" and "Why me?"
When you see other children younger than your child progressing, there is resentment. Then there are the questions you ask: "Does God favor this child more than mine?"
There are nights when sitting on a bed is a luxury. The tears and prayers last all night. Thoughts like these fill your mind: Dear God, what can I do to help my child? There are times, when being human you say, " If this is how my child will have to live in this cruel world, then Lord..." but now quite daring to finish the thought.
Pity then comes in when you feel that you want to shelter this child from everything and everyone.
Education seems to be the key word. You want to know everything about your child's diagnosis. You want to try everything in your power to help this child. As each day goes by, you love this child, even more than you could ever imagine.
With love from every fiber of your being, you learn to accept the things you cannot change, you develop the courage to change the things you can and you acquire the wisdom to know the difference.
Yes there are pity parties complete with tears from time to time, but the love that comes from the bond with your special child makes the tears worth it all.
Because of this child I have made friends and met people from various walks of life. There have been so many doors opened to me, despite the many doors that have been closed. through it all, I want to thank God for my special child Andrew Q. Rolle.
