Happy National Heroes Day, Bahamas!

Today we honor the Bahamians whose courage, creativity and vision helped shape who we are. Some changed the world on movie screens. Some did it with a guitar, a paintbrush or a song. Some took to the skies, and some fought to protect the health of our people.

Swipe to meet a few of the heroes who inspire us:
2. Sir Sidney Poitier
3. Joseph Spence
4. Amos Ferguson
5. Tony “Exuma” McKay
6. Dr. Albert Forsythe
7. Dr. Michael “Perry” Gomez

At Island Innovators Bahamas, we’re creating spaces and communities where the next generation of Bahamian heroes can create, build and lead.

Our founder, Christopher Hilton, spoke with students from the Nassau Youth Philharmonic (The Nassau Youth Philharmonic) on October 3 about conservatory life and building your own path in music. He left them with three ideas that go beyond music:

1. Learn to think for yourself and be intentional. Nobody can care more about what you want for your life than you do, so make every choice on purpose.
2. Listen and study what came before you. You learn more when you listen, and that’s how you build credibility. Whatever you want to do, spend time learning the past and find who you want to be through it.
3. Never underestimate community. The people around you are the secret ingredient.

All of this shapes how you approach things and how you carry yourself. In his words, “The world rewards those who take action.” Thank you to the Nassau Youth Philharmonic for having him, and to the students for being so engaged and welcoming!

Earlier this month, our 2026 cohort spent an evening at Jon Batiste’s Jazz Club at Baha Mar (Jon Batiste’s Jazz Club at Baha Mar), experiencing live jazz and connecting with professional musicians.

During the evening, our founder, Christopher Hilton (Christopher Hilton), sat in with officialjazzcats for a number, giving students the opportunity to see one of their mentors performing alongside the band.

Experiences like these are a priority for us because they often inspire our students in ways that a classroom alone cannot.

Grateful to the musicians of officialjazzcats for welcoming our students, and sharing their wit, wisdom and artistry so generously, helping to make the evening one to remember.
