RESPONSE TO POACHING: The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) is aware of a video currently circulating on social media that allegedly depicts an altercation involving suspected poachers and individuals who appear to be Bahamian nationals.
At this time, the Operations Department has not received any official report concerning poaching activity within The Bahamas. We are unable to confirm the date and time the video was recorded. Based on surveillance and reconnaissance conducted in the area on Sunday, 22 February, no suspected vessels were detected. Nevertheless, the RBDF continues to maintain a proactive operational posture. One vessel is currently deployed in the vicinity of the banks, and an additional vessel is en route to reinforce that presence and provide supplemental support.
As we approach the final days of the closed grouper season, the RBDF remains vigilant and fully prepared to respond to any confirmed incidents of illegal fishing or poaching. We strongly advise Bahamian fishermen not to engage suspected poachers. Instead, they are encouraged to report positions and any relevant information immediately to the RBDF so that our assets can be deployed promptly and the matter addressed through proper law enforcement channels.
The protection of our marine resources remains a national priority. This commitment was reinforced last week at the 4th Northern Caribbean Security Summit held in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, where The Bahamas joined regional partners, including the United States and the Turks and Caicos Islands, in creating a roadmap to address poaching alongside drug and migrant smuggling.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activity through the appropriate emergency contact numbers (911/919) or via the BAH WILDTIP app, available in major app stores.
