Many teachers even the most experienced ones! Still confuse three key concepts that form the foundation of all language teaching practice.
And if you’re just starting out in the field or studying for a course like TESOL, understanding this is essential.
Let’s clarify this once and for all:
📌 1. Approach
This is the broadest level. It reflects the theoretical view of how a language should be taught and learned. It involves beliefs about language, teaching, and learning.
👉 Example:
The communicative approach believes that language should be used in a functional, meaningful way for real communication.
📌 2. Method
This is the action plan based on the approach. It outlines how lessons are structured, what kinds of activities are used, and the roles of the teacher and students.
👉 Example:
Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is a method that comes from the communicative approach.
📌 3. Technique
This is what happens in practice! Techniques are the specific strategies used in the classroom, like exercises, activities, and games.
👉 Example:
A role play between students in a real-life scenario (like ordering food at a restaurant) is a technique used in the communicative method.
🎯 Why does this matter for you as a teacher?
Understanding this hierarchy changes everything:
✅ You choose activities with more intention
✅ Your students learn more clearly
✅ You grow as an educator and stand out in the field
✨ This is the kind of knowledge that separates a regular teacher from a strategic educator.
It’s also the type of theoretical foundation required in international programs like TESOL and what prepares you to teach in Brazil or anywhere in the world.
📌 Quick recap:
🔹 Approach → your teaching vision
🔹 Method → how that vision becomes a plan
🔹 Technique → the practical actions in the classroom
