The mission of the Bermuda Turtle Project is to conserve sea turtles through research and education and has been doing this since 1968.

Since shortly after colonization in the early 1600s, Bermuda has had an impressive record of striving to protect sea turtles that are now endangered or threatened worldwide. The islands that make up Bermuda are surrounded by lush seagrass beds, healthy coral reefs, and crystal-clear, unpolluted waters which provide perfect habitat for young green turtles and hawksbills. Few other places on earth can match the beauty of this remote oceanic island where turtles enjoy complete protection. Bermuda is one of a number of locations worldwide where post-pelagic, immature green turtles occur in the complete absence of adults. It may be the best site in the world where green turtles of this age can be studied in their natural habitat. Whereas most studies of sea turtles take place on nesting beaches, Bermuda provides scientists and resource managers with a unique opportunity to study the little understood juvenile stage of the green turtle. The research efforts of the Bermuda Turtle Project are focused on filling in the information gaps on green turtle biology so that successful protection may be given to these fascinating, vanishing animals. All work is done with special permit to work with these protected species. Please join our investigation into sea turtle life by learning more about the activities and discoveries of the Bermuda Turtle Project.

🐢 Tagged for the journey! 🌊💚

On August 13, 2026, an immature green turtle was captured in Hospital Bay, Bermuda, and satellite tagged by the Bermuda Turtle Project as part of the catch-mark-recapture program.

At 58.9 cm shell length and 28.3 kg, this turtle will show us if it is happy to stay in Bermuda or if it is ready for its next oceanic adventure! 🛰️🌎

Stay tuned as we track its journey! 💙

All research conducted under Bermuda Government Permit.

🐢🌊 Meet Kate — our catch-boat captain!

During our in-water sea turtle conservation course, Kate is the calm behind the scenes keeping our free divers safe and our turtles in good hands. She’s a pro at carefully detangling turtles from the net and works alongside the team to collect vital morphometric data.

And her turtle work doesn’t stop there! 💙 Outside the Bermuda Turtle Project, Kate is the Collector of Marine Specimens at the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo, where she also cares for sea turtles in rehabilitation.

Skilled, dedicated, and always ready to get the job done — we’re so lucky to have Kate on our team! 🐢💙

All research conducted under Bermuda Government
permit.

Plastic pollution doesn’t disappear—it becomes a problem for marine life, our food, and our future.

Let’s keep Bermuda Beautiful together!

During our in-water research, we keep our sea turtles as comfortable as possible and keep their time out of water as short as possible! 💦

📏Once they have been tagged, measured and have samples taken, we safely release them back where we caught them.
✅ This work is carried out under the appropriate government permits and established conservation guidelines. ✅

As the 29th Bermuda Turtle Project In-Water course comes to an end, we want to give a special shoutout to the BTP team leaders and staff for all their effort and dedication, not only during these two weeks, but throughout all the years they have devoted to this project. 🐢

Without the time and effort they put into coordinating this program, as well as their expertise, guidance, and mentorship, this experience wouldn’t be possible.

Thank you for everything you do and for sharing your knowledge and passion with us. We are incredibly grateful!

Today, the participants of BTP 2026 had the opportunity to share their work from back home with the community at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo! 🐢

From different countries and conservation projects, we got to see how our work connects across borders and how protecting sea turtles in one part of the world can contribute to their conservation throughout their migratory range.

A great reminder that sea turtle conservation is truly a global effort. 🌎

Today during fieldwork, we had the support of our Co-Director, Jennifer Gray! 🐢

We caught and tagged green turtles on the east side today, bringing us to 36 turtle captures so far!

Our biggest turtle weighs 44.7 kilograms! 🏋🏽
