🌍 Peace English Club: Reflections on Our Shared Future 🕊️
Today, our club watched and discussed the compelling TEDx talk by Brian Toon: "I've studied nuclear war for 35 years — you should be worried."
In his presentation, Toon draws a chilling parallel between the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs and the potential impact of a nuclear conflict. The key difference? An asteroid is fate, but a nuclear war would be our own doing.
Key Takeaways from the Talk:
The Hidden Danger: Most military plans only focus on the immediate blast. However, the "collateral" effects—massive fires in cities—would send enough smoke into the atmosphere to block the sun for years.
Nuclear Winter: Even a "small" regional conflict could trigger a global nuclear winter, causing temperatures to plunge and lead to a global famine that could threaten 90% of the world's population.
No One is Safe: This isn't just a problem for nuclear-armed nations. The environmental consequences would ignore borders, affecting every person on the planet.
Our Discussion:
Watching this made us realize that peace is not just the absence of war; it is the active protection of our global environment and future. We discussed how awareness and political action—like the 2017 UN resolution to ban nuclear weapons—are essential steps toward keeping the promise of a nuclear-free world.
As Toon reminds us, we must wake up before we "sleepwalk into a nuclear disaster." Let’s continue to use our voices and our English skills to advocate for a safer, more peaceful world.
