March 3rd is Dyscalculia Day!
Did you know that dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty that affects a person’s ability to understand number-related concepts and perform accurate math calculations? It is almost as common as dyslexia, yet often much less understood and recognised.
To mark Dyscalculia Day, we are sharing an essential resource prepared by the European Dyslexia Association’s (EDA) Dyscalculia Academic Committee. Whether you are an educator, a parent, or someone living with dyscalculia, this page provides expert research informed insights into what dyscalculia is and how we can provide better support.
Knowledge is the first step toward inclusion!

We will also be recording the webinar and sharing it on our YouTube channel after the event, if you are not able to join live.

From Math-Profile to Practice: Comprehensive Assessment and Ecological Intervention in Dyscalculia.
The European Dyslexia Association (EDA) is proud to present a webinar to explore this topic to celebrate Dyscalculia Day on March 3, at 7pm CET. This 90 minute webinar aims to promote evidence-based understanding of dyscalculia through real educational practice, longitudinal data, and collaboration between researchers, educators, and families, in alignment with the mission of the European Dyslexia Association.
Dr. Giannis Karagiannakis will present a longitudinal, school-based examination of dyscalculia through anonymised case studies of students meeting diagnostic criteria for dyscalculia, followed over a two-year period within mainstream educational settings. Drawing on the framework proposed by the EDA Academic Dyscalculia Committee, the session will outline the core components of a comprehensive dyscalculia profile, including number sense, symbolic processing, arithmetic reasoning, executive functions, visuospatial skills, and learning dynamics over time.
To learn more and to register to attend live see https://www.tickettailor.com/events/eda/2058172
Please note that this webinar will be recorded for future viewing on the EDA YouTube Channel.

Is the dyslexic brain 'fixed' or 'flexible'? New research provides some answers. A new study published in Nature Communications by Mitchell, J.L., Yablonski, M., Stone, H.L. et al just gave us a deeper look into the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA) - the part of the brain that acts like a 'mailbox' for recognising written words.
The Key Takeaways:
1. Brain Differences: Children with dyslexia often have a VWFA that is smaller, less active, or even hard to detect compared to typical readers.
2. Growth is Possible: When children receive intensive reading intervention, this ‘reading centre’ actually grows and becomes more active! This proves that the brain can re-wire itself with the right support.
3. The Unique Trait: Even when reading skills improved significantly, the VWFA remained smaller than in typical readers. This suggests that while we can bridge the skill gap, the dyslexic brain maintains its own unique architecture.
The bottom line is that intervention can works wonders for skills and brain growth, but dyslexia is a fundamental, lasting trait of how a brain is built. Dyslexia is lifelong, and not something that simply disappears after intervention.
