A Training and Development Program for Documentary Filmmakers from South West Asia and North Africa

NAZA, the second feature film by Close Up ’25–’26 alumni and Academy Award winners Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, will be released theatrically across 56 territories, beginning 28 September. Following its theatrical release, the film will be available to audiences worldwide for free on The Guardian’s website, as part of The Guardian and mk2 Films’ distribution strategy.

The film, awarded the Special Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, will have its North American Premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center on September 26 and 27, with screenings on Saturday at 3:30 PM and Sunday at 12:00 PM.

It will then begin its U.S. theatrical release on September 30, opening exclusively at the IFC Center in New York. It will expand to Los Angeles and other key markets on October 9, before rolling out nationally in the weeks that follow.

Yuval Abraham said: “NAZA will be available online for free, with no time limit, so that anyone can watch it and hear the soldiers' testimonies. This will happen in a few weeks—in November—the earliest date we could secure. In the meantime, we have approached cinemas in Israel and offered them the film at no cost, hoping it will be screened here immediately, alongside its international release. The film is based on three years of comprehensive journalistic investigation, and the details within it have been verified and cross-checked. It will speak for itself, and the truth will come to light.”

Kurdish Cinema Workshop in Europe 🎬

From September 18 to 20, 2026, our Founder & Executive Producer Sigal Yehuda and Close Up Producer Irmak Melek attended the Kurdish Cinema Workshop in Europe in Belgium.

During the program, our Founder & Executive Producer Sigal Yehuda delivered a presentation followed by an interactive Q&A session. Our team also had a wonderful opportunity to connect with participating filmmakers and industry professionals, alongside our Close Up alumni Mizgin Müjde Arslan (Close Up ’23-’24) and Ilham Bakir (Close Up ’19-’20).

📣 CALL FOR FILMS

The Berlinale - Berlin International Film Festival is calling for film submissions for its 2027 edition!

The Berlinale is a major public cultural event and a unique place for interaction with a film-loving public. With the participation of around 20,000 professional visitors from over 130 countries, including about 2,500 journalists, it is one of the international film industry’s most important events.

🌍 World Premieres are given priority, and both world and international premieres can be entered in all sections. The Perspectives, Panorama, Generation and Forum sections only accept European premieres.

📆 Deadline: October 21, 2026.

📍 The 77th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival will take place from February 10-21, 2027 in Berlin, Germany.

📸 Yalla Parkour, directed by Close Up ’22-’23 fellow Areeb Zuaiter and produced by Basel Mawlawi, won the Audience Award – 2nd Place at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale).

🎉 We are happy to share that CONFIDENTIAL PROJECT, by a collective of filmmakers from Afghanistan, from the 2024–2025 Close Up cohort, has won Grand Award at the DMZ 국제다큐멘터리영화제 DMZ International Documentary Film Festival Industry Production Pitch Awards!

🎬 This character-driven documentary captures the underground scenes of women’s historic resistance in occupied Kabul.

The project has also been supported with the No Other Land Award and the MEDIMED Award at the 2025 Close Up Pitching Forum.

📖 Introducing A Corner for Poetry — a series that has been a cherished part of our newsletter for a while, and that we are now bringing to our social media for the first time.

These poems are chosen by members of our Close Up community and reflects on our commitment to creative resistance and collective reflection. In a time of deep division, poetry - like documentary - offers a universal language that transcends borders and speaks to our shared humanity.

💫 We begin with a poem selected and translated by Najiba Noori, who was part of the Close Up '20-'21 cohort with her film Writing Hawa. The poem “The Daughter of Kabul”, is written by Mahtab Sahel.

📣 CALL FOR PROJECTS

The Fipadoc - International Documentary Festival is calling for projects for its International Pitches!

24 selected project teams will pitch to 60+ international funders and representatives from France TV, ARTE, RTBF, RTS, SVT, Al Jazeera, ZDF and many other broadcasters are present together with distributors, sales agents, festival programmers and film funds. To strengthen the potential outcome of the pitches, Fipadoc will schedule hundreds of tailor-made individual meetings between the pitch teams and these decision makers.

📍The International Pitches will take place from January 27-28, 2027, within the 9th edition of FIPADOC in Biarritz, France.

🎬 Shot at night on the rooftops of Tel Aviv, NAZA reveals the systems behind Israel’s bombing of Gaza and its mass killing of Palestinian civilians.

NAZA is produced by The Guardian and James Wilson (JW Films), and executive produced by Jonathan Glazer, the Oscar-winning team behind The Zone of Interest.

The film’s title — NAZA — is a term that appears throughout the documentary. It is a military acronym euphemistically used by Israeli intelligence to indicate the number of civilians it expects will be killed in an airstrike.

We are deeply proud to have walked part of this journey alongside Rachel and Yuval.
