For World Refugee Day, CALLS Network volunteers answer a simple question:
What is the one word that comes to mind when you hear “refugee”?

Distance, strength, expert, hope, courage, responsibility, pioneer, solidarity, emergency, potential, future, bravery, community, resilience, agency.

Changing the narrative one word at a time
And you? What do you think of when you hear the word refugee? Let us know in the comments👇💙

🌍 Looking for a meaningful way to make an impact?

CALLS Network is seeking volunteers, advocates, organisers, creatives, researchers, fundraisers, and changemakers who believe refugee communities should be at the centre of humanitarian action.

Whether you can contribute a few hours, share your expertise, support campaigns, help organise events, or mobilise resources, there is a place for you in our global network.

Together, we can amplify refugee-led solutions, strengthen agency and solidarity, and help build a more equitable humanitarian system.

For World Refugee Day 2026, refugee leaders and refugee-led organisations are celebrating courage, resilience and community solidarity.

At CALLS Network, we’re amplifying their initiatives and contributing to challenging stereotypes of refugees as victims and recipients of aid.
We showcase refugees as leaders, organizers and changemakers in their communities.

Swipe through to see how our partners are marking World Refugee Day 2026!💙

🇲🇷 In Mbera Camp, Mauritania, SOS Nomade marked the Day of the African Child through awareness sessions on safe drinking water, alongside creative art and painting activities for children. Led by refugee communities, these initiatives create a space for learning and collective action.

🇹🇩 In Adré Refugee Camp, refugee leaders came together ahead of World Refugee Day 2026 to discuss key advocacy priorities: access to education, protection, resettlement opportunities, and peace in Sudan. Meanwhile, the Women and Girls Safe Space Initiative facilitated psychosocial support sessions to help address trauma, reduce stigma, and strengthen the wellbeing of women and girls in the community.

🇧🇩 In Cox’s Bazar, Rohingya Self-Help Groups across multiple camps have begun preparations for World Refugee Day 2026. With support from ActionAid Bangladesh, refugee volunteers are leading the process—from designing banners and posters to mobilising communities and raising awareness ahead of the day.

Refugees with disabilities are also leaders, advocates, and changemakers in their communities. The Global Network of Refugees with Disabilities (GNRD) and its member organizations around the world highlight these strengths every day.

GNRD, CALLS Network partner organization, is hosting a webinar on the occasion of World Refugee Day.

Join them to hear about what organizations led by refugees with disability are achieving and what the inclusion of refugees with disabilities in host societies and humanitarian action entails.

Today, we launch our World Refugee Day 2026 series💙🩷

Refugees are too often portrayed as recipients of aid. Yet across the world, refugee-led organisations are also humanitarian actors, frontline responders, driving change, and leading solutions in their own communities every day.

Join us over the coming days as we spotlight their stories, leadership, and impact.

What if the people closest to the challenges were leading the solutions?

In Ethiopia🇪🇹 , Ethio Friends Foundation for Refugees (EFFR) is doing just that—supporting refugee communities through education, protection, MHPSS, youth empowerment, advocacy, as well as well innovative e-commerce for livelihoods.

Proof that refugee-led organizations are still standing, responding to the needs of their communities - and innovating! - despite the humanitarian aid crisis.

Conzana is already changing lives with her organisation, Saidia Community Initiative🇰🇪

Through her work on girls' education and sexual and reproductive health, young girls are finding dignity and safety - they understand their own bodies and take control over their futures.

Refugee-led action isn't a solution for the future. It's already happening
