Budapest Pride is happening. Legally. 🌈

As Viktor Orban tried to ban it last year, the Hungarian police now have approved Budapest Pride without objections. This is an important signal that Hungary may be turning a page after years of attacks on the rights of LGBTIQ+ people.

But approval of Pride is only the first step.

Last month, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Hungary’s anti-LGBTIQ+ propaganda law violates EU law and the fundamental values on which the European Union is built. The new Hungarian government must now move swiftly to implement the judgment and fully dismantle this discriminatory legislation.

Pride is back. Now it’s time to restore equal rights and democracy.

This is more than a political announcement. It is proof that our strategic action works.

When governments attack LGBTIQ+ people, they are testing how far they can go in undermining democracy itself. Hungary’s 2021 law did exactly that.

But this time, they were challenged. By us. In the media. In EU institutions. In court. Across borders.

And now, after a historic ruling by the EU Court of Justice, Hungary’s new government has confirmed it will repeal the law.

For everyone who was told this fight was too big, too legal, too political, too impossible: it wasn’t.

We did not wait for history to happen.

We made it happen.

This week, the EU’s highest court ruled on Hungary’s anti-LGBTIQ+ law.
And this moment didn’t happen by chance.

For 5 years, Forbidden Colours + Reclaim drove the strategy behind this case:

And it worked.

For the first time ever, the Court recognised a stand-alone violation of EU values (Article 2).

In its landmark Cupriak-Trojan & Trojan judgment, the Court of Justice ruled that all Member States must recognise same-sex marriages concluded elsewhere in the EU when citizens exercise their freedom of movement. No exceptions. No borders for love.

The Court states:

The new LGBTIQ+ Equality Strategy says the right things — but not enough to match today’s reality.
While bans, censorship, and intimidation spread across Europe, the Commission still relies on soft coordination instead of real enforcement.

We welcome the words — the recognition of our rights, of the right to peaceful assembly, and of the dangers of anti-gender narratives. But rights without action are just promises.

It’s time for the Commission to find the courage to act as the Guardian of the Treaties, to use its legal tools, tie EU money to respect for rights, and fund projects that protect democracy and LGBTIQ+ people.

Strong words must become strong protection.

🚨 SECOND PRIDE BANNED IN THE EU IN 2025 🚨
After Budapest Pride was banned last month, the Romanian city of Oradea has now also banned its local Pride March — despite full legal compliance by the organisers.

🛑 The European Commission’s silence after Hungary’s Pride ban set a dangerous precedent. Now, Romania follows.

✊ Our Executive Director .bonny will travel to Oradea to join the protest and stand with the brave LGBTIQ+ community demanding visibility, freedom, and democracy.

📢 200,000+ people marched for Pride in Budapest.
They defied a ban. They risked fines.
They stood up for democracy, freedom of assembly, and LGBTIQ+ rights.

It was a historic act of courage. But let’s be clear:
👉 The law banning Pride is still in place.
👉 No legal protection has been granted.
👉 The European Commission still refuses to act.

They have the mandate.
They have the duty.
They have the tools.

🔴 200,000+ people did their job.
Now it’s s turn.

We don’t need more pinkwashing.
We need legal action. Now.
